2022 Toyota Glanza and Maruti Baleno: What are the improvements over previous generation?

Maruti Suzuki launched the 2022 Baleno recently and now Toyota launched the 2022 Glanza in the Indian market. Both premium hatchbacks are a significant improvement over the previous generation.  Today, we list down the improvements that the manufacturer made over the previous generation.

More features

Toyota and Maruti Suzuki added more features to the Glanza and Baleno so that they can stay competitive in the market. Other premium hatchbacks also come with a lot of features now. So, it was important that the manufacturers give more features to the customers. There is a new touchscreen infotainment system that is running a new user interface. Also, it is larger than the previous unit. Then there are two segment-first features. The Glanza and Baleno now come with a heads-up display and a 360-degree parking camera.

More weight and safety features

Earlier, people complained that the Baleno and Glanza felt too light and floaty on the road. So, the manufacturers decided to add weight by making some changes to the body. Both premium hatchbacks now weigh 70 kgs more than the predecessor. Moreover, they also come with 6 airbags, Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Program and Hill Hold Control now.

More fuel-efficient and CNG powertrain

Maruti Suzuki is known for its fuel-efficient engines. With the new Baleno and the Glanza, the fuel efficiency has been improved further. For the manual gearbox, the claimed fuel efficiency is 22.35 kmpl and for the AMT variant is 22.94 kmpl. This time the Baleno and the Glanza will also be offered with a CNG powertrain. The claimed fuel efficiency of the CNG powertrain will be 25 kmpl as per Toyota. However, the CNG variants have not yet been launched. Toyota will call it e-CNG whereas Maruti Suzuki already has the S-CNG line-up of cars.

Sharper design

Maruti Suzuki revamped the front-end design completely. It now gets a new grille with a chrome strip. There is a new bumper and redesigned headlamps. It still has a projector setup but the LED Daytime Running Lamps have been redesigned, they have three individual LED elements. At the rear, there is a new set of LED tail lamps and on the sides, there are new alloy wheels.

The Glanza is very similar to Baleno but the front has been changed entirely. It looks a lot sharper than the Baleno because of the more aggressive design. There are horns made up of plastic cladding and a different front grille. The headlamps have the same design as the Baleno but the LED Daytime Running Lamps are different. It gets a LED strip instead of individual elements. Then there is a slightly different alloy wheel design.

Revised interior

The interior has also been redone by both the manufacturers. Maruti Suzuki is using a black and blue theme for the cabin. The dashboard is all-new and the infotainment system takes the centre stage. There is a silver insert on the dashboard and the steering wheel. Speaking of the steering wheel, it is also new and is a flat-bottom unit.

Toyota is carrying the same design of the interior as the Baleno. However, they have made their own decisions. So, Glanza comes with a cabin finished in a dual-tone theme of black and beige and it looks airy and more premium than the Baleno. Then there are the piano-black inserts that replace the silver inserts used by Maruti Suzuki. The pre-facelift Glanza did not make any substantial change to the interior when compared to the pre-facelift Baleno.
