The Maruti Suzuki Swift has always been regarded as one of the best all-around hatchbacks in the country. However, the main reason that people love this car is because of its high fuel economy. Historically, the hatchback has always offered very high mileage models.

One of the top-selling models of its lineup was the second-generation Swift equipped with the diesel engine. It was powered by a 1.3-litre diesel DDiS motor which generated around 74 bhp and 190 Nm of torque. What was extremely impressive about this model was that it offered a mileage of 28 kmpl.

However, after the discontinuation of the diesel engines from the brand, the Swift only became available with a petrol engine. Currently, the Swift comes powered by the time-tested 1.2-litre K-Series petrol four-cylinder engine. It generates 89.8 PS of power and 113 Nm of torque.

This engine, however, will now be replaced by the all-new 1.2-litre Z-Series three-cylinder petrol engine. According to reports, this new engine will sacrifice 8.2 PS of power and 1 Nm of torque. However, it will be gaining an impressive 3.34 kmpl in ARAI-certified mileage.

The mileage of 25.72 kmpl as stated above is for the 5-speed manual gearbox. However, the mileage for the automatic transmission variant has not been revealed. Additionally, it remains to be seen if the company will offer the new Swift with a 5-speed AMT or a more conventional torque converter.

Reports, however, have revealed that the difference between the mileage of automatic transmission variants will be around 3.16 kmpl. This better fuel economy can also be credited to the 12V mild hybrid system which the Swift will be coming to India with.

In other Maruti Suzuki Swift news, recently, the Japanese NCAP tested the new Swift for its safety. And as good news, it has been reported that it managed to score an impressive four-star rating. This is much better than the one-star rating which the Swift has scored in the past.

However, it remains to be seen if the India-spec 2024 Swift also scores a 4 star rating when it’s put to test by B-NCAP (Bharat NCAP). Notably, even Global NCAP (GNCAP) is yet to crash test the all-new Swift.

Strong Hybrid Future!

Like most sub-10 lakh rupee Maruti Suzuki cars, the Swift is expected to get a strong hybrid powertrain in future. Suzuki of Japan, Maruti Suzuki’s parent company, is said to be developing an affordable strong hybrid powertrain for use in the automaker’s budget car range. While a timeline for introduction of the new strong hybrid powertrain hasn’t been revealed yet, it’s likely to happen before the next wave of emission norms come into force in the Indian market.

As of now, India is in the second phase of Bharat Stage 6 (real time driving emissions or RDE. While the Indian government has yet to notify the start date of the new Bharat Stage 7 (BS7) emission norms, union transport minister Nitin Gadkari has urged the auto industry to prepare for the strictest emission norms ever seen. Once BS7 norms come into force, nearly every car maker would have no option but to rely on hybridization to cut down tail pipe emissions.

Maruti Suzuki, being an industry leader, is expected to lead this change. The first of the strong hybrids are expected to be in India by 2027. The all-new Maruti Suzuki Swift is expected to be one of the first cars to get the newly developed low cost strong hybrid technology.
