Station wagons are highly successful in European countries but when various manufacturers launched their own estates in India, none of them survived the market. There are many who think that station wagons were launched much before its time in India and that’s why the trend never caught on. However, various manufacturers launched their products at different times in India and none of them became a high-volume product in the market. Tata Estate was first of the station wagons to be launched in India and was the first such vehicle from the brand too.
While the Estate did not become a successful product in the market, Tata launched another station wagon in the form of Indigo Marina too. Some other popular station wagons that were launched in India were Skoda Octavia Combi, Maruti Suzuki Baleno Altura, Hindustan Ambassador Estate, Fiat Padmini Premier Safari and so on. Out of these, the Tata Estate remains one remarkable product in the market and there a few handfuls of owners who have restored the Tata Estate to give it a new life.
The Tata Estate was launched in 1992 and was available in the market for 8 years. Here is a video by RP Tech Tour that shows beautiful restoration of the Tata Estate. This is a 1995 model of the Estate, which makes it 25 years old. The restoration job looks remarkable and an authentic Tata logo from the yesteryears has been placed on this car too. It gets a black bumper and a fresh coat of red paint, which gives it a new lease of life.
The video also shares the fact that all the parts that have been used for this restoration job are all original parts. The headlamps, turn indicators, tail lamps, monikers, all have been restored or sourced in its original form. It also gets the same 15-inch steel rims with the original wheel caps.
Even the cabin has been redone completely. It gets powered windows, and power steering. The cassette player installed in it is all original too. There are also features like the tachometer in the vehicle.
The Tata Estate came powered by a 1.9-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine that was sourced from Peugeot. The four-cylinder, naturally-aspirated diesel engine generates a maximum power of 67 Bhp and peak torque of 118 Nm. It gets a five-speed manual transmission. The very same engine in different forms powered the Tata Sierra and the Mobile pick-up as well. Tata added a turbocharger and intercooler to the engine at a later date to increase the power output to 90 Bhp.
