Renault forayed into the highly competitive hatchback segment with the launch of Pulse. The Pulse is a badge-engineered Nissan Micra. The Pulse retains the engine, suspension, chassis and all other mechanicals of the Micra diesel.

The Renault Pulse diesel is powered by a 1.5-litre diesel motor that puts out 63 bhp of power and torque of 160 Nm and is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The official claim of 23.08 kmpl (figures approved by ARAI) makes the Pulse, one of the most fuel efficient diesel hatchbacks in the country.

The Renault Pulse is offered in two trims: the RxL and RxZ. The top-end variant, RxZ gets a start-stop button, automatic climate control, rear wiper, and 15-inch alloy wheels. However, ABS is not offered though passenger airbag is available as an optional feature.

At Rs 5.77 lakhs for the RxL variant and Rs.6.25 lakhs for the RxZ, the Pulse  is slightly pricier than the Micra but that’s a small premium you’d pay for the Renault brand and a hatchback that is fun, frugal to drive and sports a smart feature list. Aggressive front: The Pulse has angular headlamps, a masculine sporty grille and a redesigned bumper. The Pulse is aggressive and has a masculine appeal unlike the retro-themed Micra.

Two tone upholstery: The Pulse has attractive two-tone beige-brown upholstery which gives the cabin an airy and spacious feel. It looks classy and premium as well.

Music system: The music system in the Pulse has a CD/MP3 drive, FM/AM tuner and is connected to four speakers. An Aux-in port is also available, but it lacks USB support.

Automatic climate control system: The centre console of the Pulse is laid out in a circular pattern emphasizing the ‘Twin Bubble’ design. The Pulse RxZ comes with automatic climate control, with circularly arranged controls.

On-board trip computer: The orange-lit instrument cluster in the Pulse has a multi-function display showing average fuel consumption, instantaneous fuel consumption and distance to empty. It also includes a trip computer and odometer.

Engine Start/Stop button: The Pulse has an engine start/stop button which allows the user to start or stop the engine with just a push of the button. This feature is useful to save fuel while waiting in traffic junctions for a long period.

Keyless entry: The Pulse has a smart key with sensors that locks and unlocks the car’s doors. This means there is no need to use the key or push buttons to open/close the doors.
