Mahindra and Mahindra is best known for its SUV. The brand’s value-for-money products are their USP. Over the last couple of years, rivals have eaten into Mahindra’s SUV market. To claw back market share, the Indian automotive giant is currently working to revamp their product line. Here’s what we will see coming out of Mahindra factory over next few months.
170 Bhp Mahindra XUV 500
Expected Launch: August 2017
Mahindra XUV 500 is a massive success for the company. In recent times, competition like Tata Hexa and Toyota Innova Crysta have started to bite into the XUV’s market share. The largest selling car in the D-segment is currently under the knife and will soon get updates.
The biggest change, however, will be the engine of the XUV500. Currently, the Mahindra XUV 500 is powered by a 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine that develops 140 Bhp and 330 Nm of power. The revised power of the engine will be close to 168 Bhp, and there will be a slight revision in the torque output too.
The revised engine power will put the XUV 500 in the league of Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. Mahindra will also update the interiors slightly to keep it fresh.
Expected launch: October 2017
The Scorpio is one of the best-selling models of Mahindra. Recently, the facelifted version of the Scorpio was caught testing in India. The current Scorpio was launched in 2014, and since then, Mahindra has not updated the vehicle. The new Scorpio caught on test had heavy camouflage on the front and the rear, which suggests the car will receive a minor facelift.
The new Scorpio will also receive new infotainment system that will support Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Apart from that, Mahindra will also retune the 2.2-litre mHawk engine. The 120 Bhp diesel engine is expected to receive an extra 20 Bhp with the updated model.
Mahindra Scorpio Getaway
Expected Launch: End 2017
Mahindra’s pickup truck for private buyers, Scorpio Getaway is yet to get the facelift update. The Scorpio Getaway, however, has been caught testing in India numerous times. The new Getaway will get similar front fascia like the Scorpio. The four-seater pickup is expected to get similar features as Scorpio. The same 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine will power the vehicle, and it will also get an optional 4X4 system. The new Getaway will rival the Isuzu V-Cross pick up truck.
Mahindra KUV Facelift
Expected Launch: End 2017
According to ACI, the entry-level vehicle of Mahindra, the KUV 100 is set to receive a minor update. The odd proportions of the vehicle have received a lot of criticism, but with the update, Mahindra is set to change that. The facelift may include a new front grille and revised taillamps. The engine option will remain the same as it is expected to be only a cosmetic update.
Mahindra XUV 700
Expected Launch – February 2018
Due to the low popularity of the SsangYong brand in India, Mahindra had to decide that they will rebadge the SsangYong products as Mahindra in India. The XUV 700 will be the flagship vehicle that Mahindra internally calls Y400. The 7-seater vehicle will be the re-engineered version of the SsangYong Rexton in India. While the vehicle that will be launched in India will be different to keep the cost low, the primary DNA will be shared between both the vehicles.
The Y400 will have a massive road presence due to its near to 5-metre length. While the Rexton uses high-tensile steel, the Y400 may use a lower, heavier grade of steel to keep costs low. The flagship will well-equipped and will come with features like Touch Screen Infotainment with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration. It will also get safety essentials like ABS, EBD, airbags, and ESP.
Mahindra will offer both petrol and diesel engines with the new vehicle. While the diesel version could be the same 2.2-litre mHawk with about 180 Bhp of power, the petrol engine will be a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit.
Mahindra TUV LWB (Long Wheel Base)
Expected Launch: February 2018
The TUV 300 is a sub 4-metre compact SUV. Mahindra, however, is working on a Long Wheel Base version of the TUV. The change in length will enable Mahindra to add a proper front facing the last row in the TUV, which is currently missing from the vehicle.
The TUV LWB is expected to be powered by the 2.2-litre diesel engine that is supposed to generate 120 Bhp. Mahindra may position the car to take on the MPVs like Honda BR-V in the market.
Mahindra MPV U321
Expected Launch: Mid 2018
Mahindra is testing the Innova rivalling MPV for a long time now. The car is being developed by Mahindra’s new technical centre in Troy, USA. Codenamed as U321, the new MPV will replace the ageing Xylo in the market. It will come with both 7-seat and 8-seat option.
Keeping private buyers in mind, Mahindra will put a long list of premium equipment to make it more luxurious. The vehicle will be powered by the tried and tested 2.2-litre mHawk engine. We may also see 1.5-litre petrol engine in the new MPV.
Expected Launch: Mid-2018
SsangYong Tivoli, a compact SUV from Mahindra’s subsidiary was supposed to be launched in the Indian market. Due to the low popularity of the brand, Mahindra scrapped the plan. Now Mahindra is working on a new SUV, based on the Tivoli. Internally codenamed as S201, the new vehicle will take on the likes of Ford EcoSport and Maruti Vitara Brezza.
Mahindra is developing the vehicle in-house, but it will get the same platform as the Tivoli. Mahindra has said that it will not be a rebadge job and the S201 will look quite different from the Tivoli. The S201 will likely to be powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine that is currently being developed by Mahindra and SsangYong. The diesel engine could be the 1.5-litre Twin-Scroll engine from the TUV 300.
