Tata Motors has been developing 8 new SUVs for the Indian market. These include electric vehicles, new powertrains for existing SUVs and entirely new SUVs. Today, we list all of them down.
Tata Blackbird EV
Tata Motors has started working on a new mid-size SUV, which has been codenamed Blackbird. It is expected to be a coupe version of the Nexon with a longer wheelbase and length. What is interesting is Tata Motors will first launch the Blackbird as an electric vehicle. It should launch sometime in 2023. The new SUV will be based on Nexon’s X1 platform and will measure 4.3 metres in length.
Tata will also launch petrol and diesel powered versions of the Blackbird but it will come later on. It is expected to be powered by a new 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and the existing 1.5-litre diesel engine. The new Blackbird will go against Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Nissan Kicks, Renault Duster, MG Astor and Maruti Suzuki S-Cross.
Tata’s Harrier has been selling well in the Indian market but one area where it lacks is petrol engine. The Harrier is not offered with a petrol engine. Many people are still preferring petrol engines because the emission norms are making it difficult to own a diesel vehicle. The new engine will be a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with power output of around 160 bhp. The test mules of the petrol Harrier have already been spotted on Indian roads.
Tata is also working on the petrol version of Safari, it will get the same 160 bhp, turbo petrol engine from the Harrier. The petrol variants would be lighter and less expensive than the diesel variants.
Long range Nexon EV
Nexon EV is currently the best selling electric vehicle in the Indian market. The homegrown manufacturer is working on improving the driving range of the EV by giving it larger battery pack. The batery size would go up from 30.2 kWh to 40 kWh. This means that the claimed driving should increase from 312 km to 400 km. It would also come with Electronic Stability Control and there should be adjustability for regeneration also.
Tata Punch has been incredible successful in the Indian market. There are rumors that Tata Motors is also working on a Punch with a turbocharged petrol engine a diesel engine. Both the engines will be sourced from Altroz but can be in a different state of tune. Currently, Punch is offered only with an underwelming 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine.
Tata is also considering to launch the Punch as an electric vehicle. Punch is based on an ALFA platform so it should be able to accommodate batteries and electric motor. Having said that the specifications regarding the battery size and driving range is not known. Punch EV would be the most affordable electric vehicle from Tata Motors.
Tata Motors is working on bringing back the iconic Sierra nameplate. But this time it will be an electric vehicle only. Sierra will be a developed as an electric vehicle from the ground up so it will not be based on any existing platform. Instead, it will use a new platform called Sigma, this platform is made with batteries and optimization in mind. Having said that, the Sierra won’t get launched before 2025.
