The Maruti 800 is a true icon of the Indian automobile industry. It was the people’s car in India, and a ton of families have owned this tiny yet legendary hatchback. Over the years, this car has been updated numerous times, and it still remains the most affordable car in India. Recently, an old television commercial of this iconic car has resurfaced on the internet, and it takes us back to the memory lane when this car was at its prime. The video brings a breath of nostalgia and highlights the fact that this car has come a long way from where it began.
The old television commercial (TVC) video of the Maruti Suzuki 800 has been shared on YouTube by Smart Advertisement on their channel. The video starts off with a young man arriving at a railway station. He then goes into the nostalgia of his childhood, where an old Maruti SS80 – the first generation of the 800 hatchback – is shown. The man in his flashback can be seen arriving at his school with his father. Both of their faces light up after seeing a brand-new Maruti SS80 in front of the school.

The young man, who was a kid at that time, goes inside the school with his friend who steps out from the car. The video then shows the family of the kid who came out of the SS80 putting a garland on the car after taking its delivery. The first kid then excitedly touches the car, and the other kid slaps his hand and asks him not to touch it. This flashback then ends, and the man comes back to the reality of him being in the railway station.
Soon after this, his parents are shown coming out of the train, extremely excited to meet their son. After coming out of the railway station, the father of the man gives a hand to a nearby auto rickshaw, but he stops and points towards his very own Maruti Suzuki 800 second-generation facelift model.
Both his parents then become even happier. The father of the man goes inside the car, touches the car’s steering wheel, and blesses his son. Following this, the young man then takes the driving seat of the car, and his mother also hugs him from behind, appreciating the hard work of him buying his dream car. After they leave, another man with his son in school dress can be seen staring at the car, signifying that the Maruti Suzuki 800 is indeed the dream car of Indians.
Second-generation Maruti 800
The car in the video, which the young man buys as mentioned, is the second generation of the Maruti Suzuki 800. The second-gen model for the year 1986 came with an updated design over the original Maruti SS80. It boasted a slightly smaller size but was a lot more modern than the old car. Soon after the launch of the second generation of 800, the company launched a facelift of the car as well. This facelifted model featured brand-new headlamps, taillamps, and front grille.
The second generation of the Maruti Suzuki 800 facelift came powered by a 796cc carbureted naturally aspirated inline 3-cylinder engine. This tiny engine produced a maximum of 38 PS of power and 59 Nm of torque. It came mated to a 4-speed gearbox, and the overall curb weight of this tiny hatchback was around 620 kgs.
