All-new Mahindra Thar’s India launch timeframe revealed

The next-generation Thar is likely to be slightly larger than the outgoing version, and will retain the body-on-ladder chassis. It is also expected to get more refined and have much better highway manners than the current model. It remains to be seen if Mahindra launches a rural India-focused version of the new Thar like it has with the current model. Expect better performance, fuel efficiency and handling in the new model. Off roaders will also be looking forward to a more comfortable ride quality in the new Thar.

First launched in 2010, the Mahindra Thar is India’s best selling lifestyle SUV. It’s currently available in two versions, DI and CRDe. The DI version is meant for farm and rural use as a people mover while the CRDe version is what Mahindra sells to those who want a lifestyle off-roader. The DI variant of the Thar is what brings in the maximum sales, and is powered by a 2.5 litre M2DICR turbocharged diesel engine with 63 Bhp-180 Nm outputs. While a power steering is now offered on the Thar DI, air conditioning is missing.

The Thar DI gets two wheel drive and four wheel drive options. The CRDe version of the Thar, on the other hand is a lot more powerful. It uses a 2.5 litre CRDe turbocharged diesel engine that outputs 105 Bhp and 247 Nm. A five speed manual gearbox is standard and so is a four wheel drive transfer case. The Thar CRDe gets better seats and interiors than the DI variant, and is also equipped with a power steering and air conditioner as standard. However, like the Thar DI, it’s available only with a soft top option. Prices start from Rs. 6.44 lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi.
