It has by now become fairly well-known that Maruti Suzuki India Ltd intends to launch an all-new WagonR later this year. A recent report by Moneycontrol states that the new Maruti WagonR will launch during this year’s festive season. The same report also goes on to make some revelations about the upcoming car’s engine and platform. Basically, this report is in complete sync with our earlier report on the new car’s launch date and specifications.
The new-generation WagonR will become a direct rival to the upcoming 2018 Hyundai Santro. It will be underpinned by an all-new platform. However, unlike what was being speculated by many, the car won’t get the lightweight HEARTECT platform that underpins the Baleno, Ignis, Dzire, and Swift. Instead, it will get a new platform that will be developed specifically for the new-gen WagonR and most of the other upcoming small cars from Maruti Suzuki.
The new-gen WagonR will also have an updated version of the current 1.0-litre K10 three-cylinder engine. The updates will make the motor BSVI-compliant. The current 5-speed manual transmission and 5-speed AMT options will be carried over to the next-gen model. Also, thanks to the upcoming stricter safety norms, the next-gen WagonR will offer ABS and airbags as standard fitments across all the trims.
Currently, the Maruti WagonR range starts at Rs 4.15 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi). The top-end model, which comes with all the bells and whistles along with the AMT transmission, costs Rs 5.39 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi). The next-gen model, however, is likely to be slightly expensive. The modern platform and the additional features would lead to a slight increment in the prices.
The next-gen WagonR will come hardly a couple of months after the launch of the new-gen Hyundai Santro. It may be noted that the first-gen Santro was a direct rival to the first-gen WagonR. With the Hyundai Santro making a return in an all-new avatar later this year, it makes complete sense for Maruti Suzuki to launch the next-generation of its tallboy at the earliest. Stay tuned for more details on the next generation 2018 Maruti WagonR.
