This is the all-new Hyundai Verna and it’ll soon hit Indian roads. Before India though, China is the market that will get this car first. These spyshots of the fully revealed next-generation Hyundai sedan come straight from that country. The new car will battle the likes of the Honda City and Maruti Ciaz, which means that it’ll replace the current Verna 4S.
A 2017 India-launch is almost a given considering that the Verna Fluidic made its debut here in 2012, and that the facelifted 4S model arrived in 2015. In terms of design philosophy, the new car will follow the next-gen Elantra. A sharp, edgy front end with the now-typical Hyundai hexagonal grille is standard. A flatter bonnet, new projector headlamps, daytime running LEDs and fog lamps are other stylistic changes.
Moving to the sides, the car continues to have a coupe-like profile, a design that’s been carried over from the Fluidic Verna. The rear is a complete departure from the current model though. The boot shows a high rake and clean lines, while the wraparound tail lamps are similar to the ones seen on the Elite i20. Under the hood, the 1.4 liter and 1.6 liter petrol and turbo diesel engines are expected to continue unchanged.
6 speed manual and automatic gearboxes could handle transmission duties given that the 4 speed automatic units are now passe. The car is larger in size, with the wheelbase measuring at 2,600 mm, a full 30 mm longer than that of the current model. While the new car’s height of 1,460 mm tall is the same as the current model’s, it’s 5 mm longer (4,380 mm) and 28 mm wider (1,728 mm).
So, the new Verna promises to be a larger and more comfortable car for its occupants. On the inside, expect the luxury quotient to go up by a few notches as Hyundai is known to add a bevy of features with every update. The car is also expected to get cutting edge infotainment interfaces. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are two such likely additions. In terms of pricing, expect the new car to be priced similar to the outgoing model (8-13 lakhs).
