Anand Mahindra plans to start medical college in India after seeing huge numbers of Indian students studying medicine abroad

Anand Mahindra may open a new medical college in India after he gets to know that there are over 18,000 Indian medical students in Ukraine. After the Ministry of External Affairs released the data on the number of Indian students studying medicine in Ukraine, Anand Mahindra said that he had no idea about such a shortage.

The industrialist then tagged Tech Mahindra MD and CEO CP Gurnani to explore the idea on Twitter. Mahindra also said,

I had no idea that there was such a shortfall of medical colleges in India. CP Gurnani, could we explore the idea of establishing a medical studies institution on the campus of Mahindra University?

While many Twitter users welcomed the Mahindra Chairman’s idea, some of them also cautioned about the steep fee structures in the private medical colleges in India. The tweet comes at a time when thousands of Indian students are stuck in Ukraine. According to the MEA estimates, there are around 18,000 Indian students studying medicine in the European country.

According to the National Medical Commission, there are currently 605 medical colleges in India and about 90,825 seats per year. Around 16 lakh students took the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for MBBS admissions in 2021.

Many students from India select countries like Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Georgia, Armenia, China, the Philippines and Trinidad & Tobago for the study of medicine. Many of these countries provide medical education at one-third of the cost of private medical education in India according to MoneyControl.

Mahindra already operates the Mahindra University in India. There are several streams of studies in the Mahindra University including Engineering, BA, BBA, BA LLB, M.Tech, MBA and PhD programs.

Mahindra has become quite a successful brand in India. With the launch of cars like all-new Thar and all-new XUV700, the demand for Mahindra vehicles in India has gone through the roof. Mahindra also plans to bring the all-new Scorpion into the Indian market later this year. Recently, both the vehicles were spotted testing together on the Indian roads.

The brand will also bring a slew of all-electric SUVs to the Indian market and has already started releasing new teaser videos. Currently, the brand is struggling to keep up with the demand. The waiting period on the Mahindra XUV700 has reached more than a year in many parts of the country. There is a substantial waiting period on the Mahindra Thar as well.
