Ather Energy wants to be India’s Tesla. The Indian electric vehicle start-up was founded by a duo from IIT Madras, and has just unveiled the S340 electric scooter, its first offering. The S340 is one of the hottest looking electric scooters around, and it isn’t only the design that’s making people look up and take notice.

Ather Energy calls the S340 a “smart” electric scooter. The smart tag is centered around the scooter’s touchscreen dashboard (instrument cluster) that reads out information such as speed, distance covered and navigation, while also allowing the rider to customize many functions.

The start-up has plans of launching the Ather S340 commercially by the end of this year, which is also when the price of this electric scooter would be revealed. The scooter uses a lithium ion battery pack that drives the rear wheel through a brushless electric motor.

A top speed of 75 Kph, a 0-60 Kph timing of 11 seconds, and a quick charging feature that will charge 90 % of the battery in 1 hour are other highlights of this futuristic looking scooter. A range between 50-100 kilometers per charge is expected. Talking looks, the S340 is one of the sharpest looking scooters in India currently.

It features alloy wheels, telescopic front forks, monoshock rear suspension, a front disc brake, GPS navigation and adaptive LED lighting. The scooter will be built at Ather Energy’s Whitefield factory in Bangalore. Ather aims to produce 50 scooters per day from its first factory at Whitefield.
