The Indian car market has seen a lot of diesel car launches and facelifts recently. The tables have turned in several segments; while in other things remain much the same. Here we take a look at the best selling diesel vehicles in India across segments.
These vehicles have been listed on the basis of the number of units they have sold over this year January 2012-September 2012. We have also considered how these cars have been doing in terms of sales in recent months. Let’s jump straight in to the sales numbers now!
Best selling diesel hatchback
Tata Indica and Vista
USP: Spacious and affordable

The Tata Indica and Tata Vista together take the top spot in terms of sales this year with a total sale of 75,469 units between January 2012 and September 2012. It was also the highest selling diesel hatchback in the months of September, August and July 2012 with 7,936, 7,591 and 8,852 units respectively. Best selling diesel premium hatchback
Maruti Suzuki Swift
USP: Decently equipped, easy to maintain and fun to drive

The Maruti Suzuki Swift continues to be the undisputed king of the premium hatchback segment with a total sale of 1,36,593 units between January 2012 and September 2012. The Swift’s sales however have been very volatile; it sold 9,136 units in September 2012, 804 units in August 2012 and 11,421 units in July 2012. Best selling diesel compact sedan
Maruti Suzuki Dzire
USP: Decently equipped, easy to maintain and fun to drive

Maruti Suzuki has had a strong foothold in the compact sedans segment as well. Maruti Suzuki sold 1,13,306 units of the Dzire between January 2012 and September 2012. The Maruti Suzuki Dzire has had an average sale of 12,589 units a month over the past 9 months. Best selling diesel entry level sedan
Hyundai Verna
USP: Feature rich and attractive looking

The Hyundai Verna was the highest selling entry level sedan in India in the January 2012-September 2012 period with 45,006 units sold. The Verna sold an average of 5,000 units a month in this period and its sales have been more or less consistent. It saw the highest sales number in April 2012 with the sale of 6,251 units. Its total sale for the January 2012-September 2012 period has been almost as much as the combined sale of the Sunny and the Vento which took the number 1 and 3 spot on the chart respectively. Best selling diesel premium sedan
Toyota Corolla Altis
USP: Affordable, comfortable, great highway cruiser with amazing mileage

The Toyota Corolla Altis was the highest selling car in the premium sedan segment with a total sale of 6,169 units between January 2012 and September 2012. It sold an average of 685 units a month in this period selling roughly 2,000 units more than the Chevrolet Cruze and roughly 3,000 units more than the Laura. The Altis sold the most in February 2012 when it sold 1,102 units. It has been a downhill journey for the Altis since then and it came down to 523 units in May 2012, 492 units in August and finally 424 units in September. Best selling diesel SUV
Mahindra Bolero
USP: Rugged and attractively priced

The Mahindra Bolero was the best selling diesel SUV in its segment with a whopping 83,390 units sold between January 2012 and September 2012. It sold more than the Mahindra Scorpio and XUV500 sold together in the same period. The Bolero sold an average of 9265 units a month and had consistent sales. It sold the most units in March (10,078 units) and the least in April (8,205 units).
