BMW in 2018 launched their most affordable motorcycle G 310 R and G310 GS in the Indian market. It was available in the market for over 7 years and it was developed in collaboration with TVS. BMW has recently decided to discontinue both these models from the Indian market

Why Discontinue?

The segment in which the G 310 GS and G 310 R were introduced were extremely competitive. While the competition has moved ahead both these motorcycles remained more or less the same since their launch.

BMW did offer minor upgrades to the motorcycle but, that was not enough to match with the rivals. Both these motorcycles felt dated as they didn’t offer too many features when compared to the rivals.

Other reason was the stricter OBD-2B regulations that came into effect from April this year. OBD-2B refers to the second generation of on-board diagnostics, which is a system that monitors a vehicle's emissions and other engine-related parameters in real-time.

The production of both these motorcycles has stopped since January this year. While BMW discontinued both these models, they’ll continue to offer the G 310 RR which is based on the Apache RR 310. The G 310 RR is powered by a 312-cc, single cylinder, fuel injected engine that generates 34 Ps and 27 MNm of peak torque.

This engine was also developed as part of the collaboration and it would continue to do its duties in TVS models.

Once BMW discontinues the G 310 R roadster and G 310 GS Adventure tourer, they plan to launch another model as an entry level product in the Indian market. BMW is likely to launch the F450 GS enduro motorcycle.

It was first showcased at the EICMA last year and we also saw the concept of the same motorcycle at Bharat Mobility Expo this year.

F450 GS

The F450 GS concept showcased is heavily inspired from its bigger siblings. R 1300 GS to be precise. The motorcycle displayed to us had quad LED DRLs with GS badge in the center. The concept motorcycle gets an enduro bike like design with 6.5-inch TFT display and cross-spoke wheels.

The production version of the motorcycle will have minor changes to make the motorcycle road legal. The motorcycle is likely to come with USD forks at the front with mono-shock suspension at the rear. It needs to be seen if the production version will get the spoke wheels as standard or will this be offered as an accessory.

The heart of the F450 GS is going to be a brand new parallel twin engine that generates 48 Bhp. The motorcycle would come with disc brakes at the front and rear. Just like the G 310 GS and G 310 R, the upcoming F 450 GS will also be manufactured here in India in collaboration with TVS at their Hosur plant.

This collaboration will help them is pricing the product quite competitively and this would in turn help them make the motorcycle to a wider audience not just in India but internationally. It won’t be wrong to expect TVS motorcycles in Indian market with the same BMW engine. The BMW F 450 GS is expected to get launched in the Indian market by the end of 2025.
