After being on the sidelines for so long, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India has finally announced its entry into the electric scooter segment. Honda, which currently sells the most popular ICE scooter—the Activa—in India, will soon be launching its first electric scooter. According to the company, their first EV scooter will be launched in the first three months of 2025.
The announcement of Honda’s first all-electric scooter was made following the SIAM Annual Session. Yogesh Mathur, Director, Sales and Marketing, HMSI, stated, “We will soon be coming in with our first electric vehicle. We are the only OEM left (to launch an electric two-wheeler) and it will be launched later this fiscal.”
Mathur added, “The EV market is exciting. Till last year, it was clocking around 5% growth, which has now reached almost 8%. So, the contribution of EVs is increasing.” Following this, he added that as the EV market is now growing at 8 percent, compared to 5 percent earlier, it is an exciting market.
Honda Activa Electric
Yogesh Mathur also revealed that the company is planning to launch this electric scooter in a phased manner. They will first target people in the age range of 18-40. Presently, electric scooters in India are popular within this age group.
At the moment, the exact details of their first electric scooter to be launched in India have not been revealed by Honda. However, many believe that it could be an electrified iteration of their most popular scooter—the Activa.
It is believed that the electric scooter from Honda will be launched in India at a price range of Rs 1.25 lakh to Rs 1.3 lakh. This means that it will be competing with the likes of the TVS iQube and Bajaj Chetak. It will also rival the country’s largest EV scooter maker, Ola’s S1 Air and S1 Pro.
Presently, the S1 Air’s top-spec variant offers a 4 kWh battery pack. With this, it offers a range of 165 km. It is believed that Honda could be targeting similar numbers with their first all-electric scooter for India.
Honda Activa Electric Has Been Delayed Multiple Times
This is not the first time that Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India has confirmed the launch of the Activa Electric. Over the years, it has confirmed this announcement many times. However, each time, the development of the scooter was delayed. The first time this announcement was confirmed by Atsushi Ogata, Managing Director of HMSI.
Then, once again in January of last year, the same was confirmed. At the time, Ogata stated, “We are locally developing our electric two-wheelers in close coordination with Honda’s teams in Japan, and we aim to be ready with the first scooter around the same time next year—definitely within FY 2023-’24.”
Honda Is Increasing Its Production Capacity
Earlier this year, in April, it was announced that the company had started adding new production lines at its facilities. These new production lines have been added to their Gujarat and Karnataka facilities. Most likely, the production of the Honda Activa Electric will commence in December of this year in Karnataka.
According to reports, the additional third line at the Gujarat factory is expected to contribute an additional 6.6 lakh units to the company’s annual production volume. The company will also add a dedicated line for electric vehicles, which will be set up in FY25. This expansion will raise the company’s overall annual manufacturing capacity by about 9 lakh units.
