BMW has begun importing the i8 hybrid sportscar into India ahead of the car’s launch that is slated to happen in the next few months. Limited units of the i8 hybrid sportscars will be sold in India. The i8 will serve as a brand builder for BMW in India, highlighting the German luxury car maker’s engineering and technological prowess. The i8 hybrid sportscar was showcased at this year’s Indian auto expo. In India, expect the four seat i8 hybrid sportscar to command a price tag in excess of 2 crore rupees, what with the car serving as BMW’s flagship model.
The i8 will use both petrol and electric propulsion mediums. The petrol engine will be a 1.5 liter-3 cylinder unit that is turbocharged. This engine makes 231 Bhp of peak power and 320 Nm of peak torque. Mated to a 6 speed automatic gearbox, the turbo petrol motor drives the rear wheels of the i8. The electric motor of the sportscar makes 131 Bhp of peak power and 250 Nm of peak torque right from idle, and drives the front wheels. Whilst both the petrol and electric motors can operate independent of each other, they combine to make for maximum performance, pushing up power and torque to 362 Bhp-570 Nm.
While the petrol and electric motors work in tandem, the BMW i8 reaches 100 Kph from standstill in just 4.4 seconds, with top speed rated at 250 Kph. In all-electric mode, the car manages a top speed of 120 Kph, with range limited to 35 kilometers. The futuristic looking i8 hybrid sportscar uses a combination of aluminium and carbon fiber reinforced polymer for its body shell. The car weighs under 1,500 kilograms and this low weight, combined to the hybrid powerplant, gives the car a claimed fuel efficiency figure of 40 Kmpl, which is simple outstanding to say the least.
