Bulletproof Toyota Land Cruiser SUV of a Chief Minister: Closer look at what it’s made of

Politicals leaders in India enjoy maximum security. Powerful position holders like the chief ministers, prime ministers get a good safety blanket and most ministers move around in bulletproof vehicles. Bulletproof or armoured vehicles are something that most of us don’t get to see throughout our lifetime. Well, here is a video that explores an armoured Land Cruiser that belongs to a chief minister in India.

The video by Turbo Xtreme shows the armoured Land Cruiser from inside out and he also drives the car around to show how it feels. This is a very old Land Cruiser. It is a 2009 model but has been converted to the 2019 model by replacing the panels and adding a new bumper and grille. From the outside, it looks like a standard Toyota Land Cruiser but there is a lot going on underneath the body.

The video first shows the cabin of the vehicle. It all looks regular with a standard multifunction steering wheel, an OEM infotainment system and regular seats. The cabin does looks luxurious and has all the modern features including automatic climate control. It also gets wooden inserts on the dashboard and central console.

When you look at the windows, you start seeing the differences in the vehicle. The windows are sealed and cannot be rolled down. Since it is a standard car turned into an armoured vehicle, it has the power window buttons but they do not work. In armoured vehicles, windows are layered and are much thicker than the windows in standard cars. So the mechanism to roll them down do not work, especially in the converted armoured cars.

Armour all around

The vehicle gets an array of armour all around. The extra armoured plates increase the weight of the car from an OEM weight of around 2.2 tons to about 4 tons. To support the increased weight of the body, the suspension is upgraded. The tyres are also made to be leakproof and puncture-proof with special sealant. The tyres seal themselves as soon as a bullet hits or a puncture happens.

To make the cabin bulletproof, all the doors get high-grade kevlar armour, which is quite heavy. Also, the panoramic sunroof is now sealed. All the body panels were removed to add the Kevlar protection and putting them back on the body.

The engine bay is also protected with Kevlar to ensure that the bullet doesn’t harm the engine and other important components. But since the added weight of the Kevlar makes the vehicle extremely heavy, it does become lethargic to drive around. However, the video says that it never became boring to drive the vehicle around.

It is powered by a 4.5-litre V8 diesel engine that generates 261 Ps and 650 Nm of peak torque. The vlogger wrongly mentions that it is powered by a 5.7 litre V8 petrol engine. Toyota only offered Land Cruiser in India with a diesel engine. The diesel V8 is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission with full time 4WD system.
