Mahindra Thar 5 Door Unveiled: Launch Date, Price,  and Features Review

Mahindra Thar

The Mahindra Thar took the Indian off-roading scene by storm when it launched in 2020. With rugged construction, potent engines and impressive capability, the Thar became an instant icon. However, the 3-door configuration posed practicality issues for some buyers. Mahindra is now set to introduce the Thar 5 Door in 2024 to address those concerns. Here’s an early preview of what we can expect from the more practical new iteration.

All New Extended Profile

The most obvious change is the addition oacf two extra doors for easier access to the rear seats. This also allowed 5 Door Thar to stretch the wheelbase for better interior room. Exterior dimensions stand at 4,070mm length, 1,855mm width and a height of 1,895mm. The front retains the 3-door Thar’s signature 7-slat grille and round LED headlamps. At the rear, tweaked LED tail lamps are joined by newly designed alloy wheels.

Enhanced Everyday Usability

While still highly capable off-road, the Mahindra Thar 5 Door leans more towards everyday family usage. The front seats are as accommodating as before, but the longer wheelbase liberates generous room for rear passengers. There’s also now auto climate control, rear AC vents, fast charging USB ports and segment-first rear seat arm rests.

Boot space sees a mild 70 litre increase to 384 litres. But folding down the 2nd row opens up a cavernous 857 litres cargo capacity. New creature comforts like auto headlamps/wipers, cruise control and a sunroof further boost comfort and convenience.

Familiar Powertrain Options

As expected, the Mahindra Thar 5 Door continues with the tried and tested powertrains from the 3-door version. This includes the 150PS/320Nm 2.0L turbo-petrol and the 130PS/300Nm 2.2L diesel. Both engines come mated to either a 6-speed MT for purists or 6-speed AT torque converter gearboxes for regular usage. Off-road hardware like mechanical locking differentials, terrain response modes and hill descent control will also make it intact.

Pros and Cons of Mahindra Thar 5 Door 2024

  1. Iconic Styling – Embraces the iconic retro design and rugged charm of the 3-door Thar that fans love while adding two extra doors.
  2. Roomy Cabin – The extended wheelbase opens up rear seat space and accessibility for more comfortable family adventures.
  3. Off-road Pedigree – With 4WD, a low-range gearbox, and impressive ground clearance it can conquer tough terrain.
  4. Well-Equipped Interior – The cabin gets modern touches like a digital display, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay connectivity and functional cubby storage.
  5. Powerful Performance – A responsive, turbo-petrol engine delivers exciting acceleration whether hustling around town or off the beaten path.
  6. Safety Upgrades – Adds reassuring safety kit including dual airbags and advanced driver assistance systems to keep passengers protected.

  1. Weaker Breakover Angle – The longer frame reduces its ability to crest steep hills without scraping the underbelly.
  2. Added Weight – Extra size and gear contributes to a heavier curb weight which slightly hinders hardcore off-road agility.
  3. Styling Too Retro? – While iconic, the old-school design won’t appeal to those wanting a more modern rugged SUV aesthetic.
  4. Pricey Flagship Variants – Opting for top-end trims with additional capabilities significantly ups the cost.
  5. Tight Third Row – Accessing the rearmost bench requires folding second-row seats which cramps legroom.
  6. Unknown Reliability – As a new model, it’s unproven long-term how durable or reliable the vehicle will be for owners.

The Perfect Post-Pandemic SUV?

If priced attractively, expect the Mahindra Thar 5-door to be a sure-shot success just like its smaller sibling!
