Indian Start-Up Founder Thanks Apple Watch For Saving His Life After Car Crash

Recently, an incident involving an Indian-origin entrepreneur from California has been shared online. He highlighted that after a rear-end collision, his Apple Watch managed to call the 911 emergency helpline, and within minutes, police had arrived at the scene of the accident.

The post sharing the experience of the entrepreneur who was helped by his Apple Watch has been shared on X. It comes courtesy of Kuldeep Dhankar, who is the founder of a tech startup called Last9.io. In his recent X post, the entrepreneur shared a picture in which an old-generation Honda Accord can be seen on the side of the road with a completely destroyed front end.

Dhankar, in his post, mentioned that this picture was taken after his vehicle was involved in a rear-end accident. The location of this accident was I-5 in Southern California, and thankfully, even after such a horrific crash, he was fine. The entrepreneur added that just 30 minutes after the arrival of police, he managed to continue his journey.

Apple Watch called 911

Now, the main highlight of this accident, according to Dhankar, was that the police authorities were not called by him. Rather, it was done by the Apple Watch he was wearing. He stated, “Apple Watch detected that we were in a crash and auto-called 911, and there was an officer on the scene within minutes. We were able to leave in 30 minutes and got to our destination safe.”

In the same post, the entrepreneur also showed his gratitude to the tech giant Apple and the California Highway Patrol by stating, “So impressed by Apple Watch and California Highway Patrol. Also thankful. Very thankful.”

How did Apple Watch call 911?

Many people who buy the Apple Watch think of it as just another tech product from Apple, which shows time and has a few more features. However, it’s incidents like these that highlight how many safety features this product has to offer. For those who may wonder how the watch managed to detect a crash, there are a few different reasons.

The first is that the Apple Watch comes equipped with an accelerometer and gyroscope, which can quickly detect if the person wearing it has been involved in a crash. It can then immediately call emergency helplines like 911 if the person does not respond in a fixed timeframe.

It also shares the exact location of the person with the first responders so that they can reach as quickly as possible. Apart from these, the Apple Watch is fitted with motion sensors as well, which can identify hard falls. Again, if after a fall the person wearing the watch does not respond quickly, emergency services are called.

Apart from these, the Apple Watch, with its ECG app and blood oxygen monitoring sensors, can detect if the person wearing it is having irregular heartbeats. It can also detect low and high heart rates, which generally are a signal before cardiac arrest. The watch can also monitor blood oxygen levels as well.
