Public display of affection (PDA) on moving cars and motorcycles has become an alarming new trend. On social media, we often come across instances of couples kissing and cuddling on moving vehicles- a very dangerous act. In most cases, there would be traffic and pedestrians around as well. A recent viral clip from the Chandigarh–Manali highway shows a young couple leaning out of the sunroof of a moving Hyundai Creta and engage in PDA.

In the video, we see the couple leaning out of the sunroof. The guy is seen kissing the girl and cuddling her tight. Things soon get steamy. The entire action is filmed by someone in a car that was following the Creta. The couple seems carefree and unbothered by the presence of vehicles and people around.

The Creta seems to be driving at high speed. The couple, however, laughs and stops when surrounding vehicles come closer. A user named Sachin Gupta shared the video on X (formerly Twitter), calling out the dangerous stunt.

Internet Reacts

People on the internet have reacted strongly to the clip. One X user wrote, "Ek aur dhakad ji sunroof kholkar pradarshan kar rahe hain. Video is from Chandigarh-Manali four lane highway.”

Another comment reads “Nothing to say… it’s become a normal thing,” while another joked, “Dhaakad people teaching everyone stunts.” Many urged in comments that strict action should be taken against the offenders.

Authorities Take Action

According to reports, the couple was tracked down after the video went viral. Authorities traced the car’s registration plate, found out the owner who is reportedly from the Guhla village in Haryana. They have also issued a fine of Rs 4,000. This sent a clear message that such stunts are never to be tolerated

While public display of affection (PDA) is not illegal in India, such acts can be penalized under Section 294 of the Indian Penal Code if they annoy others, cause inconvenience to the public or if these are found obscene. In cases such as this, the intimate acts could get other motorists distracted, and the same could lead to accidents.

More Such Incidents...

This isn’t the first time such videos have created controversy. In Bengaluru previously, a couple was fined Rs 1,500 for similar behaviour. Another famous incident is that of BJP MLA Manohar Dhakad, often referred to as the “MLA Dhakad case”. The MLA was filmed in an intimate moment on a Madhya Pradesh highway. The previous comments were referring to this.

On June 22, another viral video showed a group of young tourists drinking and partying in a moving car, popping out of windows and the sunroof. They were fined Rs 2,500.

In another video, we saw a Bengaluru couple romancing on a Royal Enfield Classic. The bike was being ridden by the boy on a busy road, and the girl was seen sitting on the tank facing the rider. She was hugging him. The social media user who shared the video online also said that the couple was seen romancing and kissing in public. This is, however, not shown in the video. It is clear from the video that both their lives were put to risk by the stunt.

Bottomline

In each of these cases, the debate is the same: Where do we draw the line between personal freedom and public safety? But again, filming these intimate moments and sharing it on public domain, is a strong privacy breach.

These cases should be dealt in more mature and rational ways. With proper enforcement and public awareness, risky trends like this can be discouraged.
