Another day, another incident of dumb people popping out of sunroof! We have been seeing such instances ever since sunroofs became a thing in the country. This recent incident had a boy stand out of the sunroof of a Hyundai Venue, popping the upper half of his body out, while the vehicle was reportedly doing a speed of 80 kph. A user captured this on camera, and shared the video on X (previously Twitter).
Think cruising at 80km/h with your head out the window is cool? Think again. You’re basically reserving your spot in the hospital pic.twitter.com/y2YpXHOciO

The video shows a Fiery Red Venue (with a Black roof and a Sunroof) cruising on the fast lane of what appears to be a highway. The mini SUV should be doing a speed of around 80 kph. A guy, most probably a teenager, is seen standing, popping his upper body out of the sunroof, and enjoying the ride. He tries to pull off some Bollywood swag and is seen enjoying the ‘wind in the hair’ experience. It is one of the most glorified experiences in our view, and this could be the stupidest way to get a taste of it!
Now you might say, not everyone can afford a Porsche Boxster, so how else do you expect them to get the ‘wind in their hair’? Buy a hair dryer or a convertible Thar- we don’t have an answer for that, but sticking out of the sunroof is not the route to take.
Considering the Venue was doing 80-odd kph, he had every chance of breaking his spine and being paralysed if not dead in the event of a panic braking. Even the driver of the vehicle is seen sticking his hand out to enjoy the wind. Ignorance or arrogance, these acts are stupid and alarming.
Now leave the case of him falling off or getting slammed in the event of hard braking. Think about the 80kph and the momentum involved. When the guy is standing completely exposed to the wind and anything it might carry, the vulnerabilities are immense. Imagine some random debris, sand or even an insect striking him in the eye at that speed! Now you see the danger, don’t you?
In a previous incident, two guys who tried standing out from the sunroof on a moving Kia Carnival met with a similar fate. The MPV was moving on a narrow road, and they were both posing for photographs, sticking their upper halves out of the sunroof. Suddenly, some unexpected, unidentified object appeared in front of the vehicle causing the driver to hit the brakes. This made the unexpecting duo slam themselves against the vehicle’s roof. From the video, it is clear that their spines and heads should have taken decent hits. It must have hurt for sure, but things could have been much worse.
Standing Out Of The Sunroof Is Illegal!
Many might be new to this information, but standing out of the sunroof is considered a stunt on public roads, and is thus illegal. Any such practice can be fined under sections 184 and 177 of the Motor Vehicle Act (MVA). In previous instances, people were fined handsome sums for standing out of the sunroof with a gun, with kids, with alcohol and a girlfriend and with nothing! The Indian obsession with sunroof is incredible for the wrong reasons.
So What Is The Sunroof For?
They are for anything but popping yourself or fractions of you out through! They help bring more light into the cabin and generate a sense of added room on the inside. It helps in making the cabin pleasant and airy. It also helps in better ventilation, making it easier for the inside air to make a quick scoot, and to suck in fresh air. It can also help in faster cooling of the cabin, after leaving the car parked in hot, humid climate for long. And finally, it feels good to watch the sky or the moon while on the move…
