The new Hyundai Verna may not be a big volume seller in its segment. But it’s got class. It’s got qualities. The 1.5 Turbo variant is already known for its immaculate performance and road manners. It is also garnering much appreciation and admiration from the tuner community! In a recent video by ‘The Drivers Hub’, the host features a stage 2 tuned Verna 1.5 TGDi Turbo that to our knowledge, is India’s most powerful Verna today. This ‘mean machine’ can churn out 200 hp and 300 Nm!
This Verna has been built by CarMed and Code 6. It gets a stage 2 tune and gets the infamous Pops and Bangs tune from Code 6. It doesn’t however, get an intercooler. Other modifications include a down-pipe exhaust (Akrapovic) and BMC drop-in air filter. The risk here is the absence of an intercooler, which is a completely recommended addition. Adding it could easily push the power up by another 15-20 horses.
This car gets a manual transmission and is quite fast. Interestingly, the output here is 20 odd horses more than the Stage 2 Virtus. If you’ve been following the two, you’d know that the Verna would beat the Volkswagen in the way it drives and handles. The tune-up has only made things worse for the German!
The host says he’s used Volkswagens for long and further adds that this stage 2 Verna 1.5 Turbo feels miles ahead of a similar spec Virtus in terms of performance and handling. He says it delivers the ‘European car feel’ which even the modern VWs lack.
The host says that this car drives so very well and is eager to perform. It is fun and easy to rev-match and do heel-and-toe etc. You can get into the power band at any given rpm- he says. The video also has multiple instances featuring the exhaust sound. It feels great to listen to.
Another advantage that this car has over the Virtus is the value it packs. It could easily cost over 90,000 rupees to just unlock the ECU and do a stage 2 tune. It would still produce just 180 hp. The Verna 1.5 on the other hand, would cost just 1. 17 lakh for the entire setup- Stage 2 tune, Down pipe exhaust, and the BMC air filter. If you compare the stock car prices, the Verna is almost 1 lakh rupees cheaper than the Virtus GT. This pumps even more value into it.
Can you take the Verna 1.5 to stage 3? Theoretically, you could think about installing hybrid turbos and move towards stage 3. However, they aren’t the only things needed to achieve the tune. The clutch, brakes, and several other components may need to be upgraded and you will need an intercooler for sure. The Verna’s platform is definitely undergoing rapid evolution…
New Hyundai Verna: Stock Specifications
Hyundai offers two engine options on the new Verna- the 1.5 naturally aspirated petrol and 1.5 turbocharged petrol. The sedan has ditched the popular diesel engine in its latest generation and is now a petrol-only model. The less-exciting NA engine (1.5 MPi) produces 115 PS and 144 Nm while the larger 1.5L motor churns out 160 PS and 253 Nm.
The Verna Turbo has built a reputation for itself by excelling in performance and dynamics. Tuners from around the country seem to regard the platform and the engine as quite flexible and friendly too. We can thus expect more builds and tunes based on the Verna to be out in the time ahead.
