You would know the Mahindra Scorpio and a few of you would remember the pickup truck version it had- the Scorpio Getaway. It made its India debut much before Isuzu came with the DMax VCross but seems like it is just the latter that stood the test of time. The Getaway currently ranks among the forgotten cars that deserve more praise. In a recent video shared by MIHIR GALAT, we get to see what looks like India’s Wildest Scorpio Getaway. Let’s delve into the details…
The video comes from Valley Run in Aamby valley. The vehicle is owned by an MLA who uses it for election rallies and similar events. This Getaway gets a lot of exterior modifications including a 12-inch lift. It looks more or less like a monster truck. It’s been built by GS Customs, Pune. This project is still underway and more modifications will be added in the days to come.
This Scorpio Getaway 4×4 gets a full-metal bumper with integrated crashguards. The suspension has been modified into a five-link unit. The vehicle rides on 20-inch tyres, which look a bit too small for its overall proportions. It also gets massive wheel arches and metal side steps. Furthermore, the vehicle has been facelifted. It has been fitted with the front fascia of the Scorpio Classic. The grille, headlamps, and front bumper have been borrowed from the Classic.
The GS Customs spokesperson also says that the vehicle is awaiting more work to be done on it. The wheel size is set to go up and the ground clearance (which is massive now) could come down a bit. At present, this vehicle offers more body roll than its stock form. This is expected to improve once the work is completed.
The interior will also undergo major revamps. Currently, it gets Scorpio Classic-borrowed dashboard design and trims. The same could be worked on further to bring about a more comfortable, livable interior experience. It seems to be too early to comment on other modification plans for this Getaway.
Mahindra Scorpio Getaway: Looking Back At It
Mahindra first launched the Scorpio pickup aka Scorpio Getaway in India, in April 2006. It remained an extremely niche product and the same was reflected in domestic sales volumes. Currently, it is sold in countries like Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Chile, Italy, Nepal, GCC, Latin America, Africa and Indonesia, under various names. In many of these countries, it is sold as a commercial vehicle. In Europe, it is called the Mahindra Goa Pik-Up. In some other countries, it is even called the Mahindra Pik-Up. Interestingly, in the Indian market, the Pik-Up name is used for commercial pickup trucks based on Bolero.
Back in its day, the Scorpio Getaway used to come in both single-cabin and double-cabin layouts. 4WD variants were also available. In many markets, it was pitched as the successor to the previous Mahindra Bolero Camper. Varying between markets, the Scorpio Getaway has had three different diesel engines- 2.2 L mHawk I4, 2.5 L m2DICR S2 I4 and 2.6 L SZ CRDe I4.
Mahindra Readying New Pickup Truck?
Mahindra is known to be working on a new lifestyle pickup truck based on the outgoing Scorpio-N. Upon launch, it will go against the likes of Toyota Hilux in the Indian market. It will be a global product, and for the time being, the manufacturer rightly calls it the Global Pik-Up. The production form would be designed at the Mahindra India Design Studio (MIDS). The visual similarities with the Scorpio-N will be the headlight, bonnet, fenders, and front doors.
Mahindra says that the upcoming truck will be based on a ‘next-generation ladder-frame’ platform (which now we suspect, could be a derivative of the Thar ROXX platform), carefully engineered to excel in both Global NCAP and Euro NCAP tests. Powering the Global Pik-Up would be a Gen-II all-aluminum mHawk diesel engine. Both the familiar 6-speed manual and an Aisin-sourced 6-speed automatic transmissions will be available. The vehicle will also come with 4WD tech.
