Indian Dad Checking Build Quality of Old And New Mercedes Benz G-Wagens Is Hilarious

Lately, build quality of cars is something that many people who buy cars are considering. There are several ways that people try to check the build quality of a vehicle. We do have Bharat NCAP crash test scores for some vehicles, but not all the models sold in India have undergone this test. In such cases, people often test the quality by pressing the sheet metal on the body of the car.
Here we have a video where an Indian dad is seen checking the build quality of an old and a new G-Wagen in a very unique way. The video has been shared by Aun Rizvi on his Instagram page. In this video, we see an Indian dad standing next to two Mercedes-Benz G63 AMGs in his driveway. One of them is the older generation, while the other is the current generation model.
The video has been posted with the caption, “Dad’s way of checking the build quality of cars.” We first see a transparent plastic sheet in the dad’s hand.
He places the plastic sheet on the body of the car and then places a magnet on it. The magnet sticks to the metal body panels on the older-generation G63, while the same sheet and magnet fall off the newer generation model.
In short, the Indian dad’s way of testing the build quality of a vehicle was by checking the amount of metal used on the exterior of the car. It is actually a funny video and not something that should be taken seriously.
With the help of modern techniques, car manufacturers have managed to achieve sturdy build quality while reducing the use of excess metal on the outside. Safety norms are also a reason why we don’t see metal bumpers on many cars now.
Assuming the build quality of a vehicle by checking the amount of metal is actually not something that should be taken seriously. We can definitely say that they might have reduced the amount of metal panels on the exterior when compared to the previous generation, but that doesn’t prove that the build quality of the vehicle has come down.
We have come across several videos online where social media influencers and vloggers are seen standing on the roof, bonnet, and even flexing the body panels of the vehicle. Depending on the amount of flex these metal sheets show, they try to determine the build quality.
This is not the right approach. Build quality of a vehicle is not determined by the exterior skin. It is actually the internal structure that protects the occupants and driver from injuries in case of an accident.
In most cars that are sold in India, the skin is designed in such a way that it either crumbles or deforms. This is done intentionally so that the skin absorbs some of the pressure from the impact before transferring it to the structure.
The structure absorbs the impact and ensures that the car occupants remain safe. When the exterior skin is too stiff, it is not considered safe for pedestrians, as they’ll end up with serious injuries in case of an accident. So, never judge the build quality of a vehicle by checking the exterior panels.
