When it comes to automotive television shows that have had the most impact on automotive enthusiasts, BBC’s Top Gear is probably the biggest one out there. The trio of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May was extremely iconic, and even today, they are known for their expertise and humor regarding all things related to automobiles. Most recently, James May, more popularly known as “Captain Slow,” shared a video on his own YouTube channel. This video was about his candid thoughts on the newly launched Tesla Cybertruck EV pickup truck.

The video, as mentioned, has been shared on James May’s personal YouTube channel. In this video, Captain Slow gets to drive a Tesla Cybertruck electric vehicle for the first time. While driving, he gives his candid thoughts on this extremely unique electric truck from Tesla. He talks about the design, the ergonomics, the drive, and all the other things related to this truck.

James May’s Thoughts on Tesla Cybertruck’s Design

It starts with James May reaching Los Angeles, California, to drive the Tesla Cybertruck. He first states that the Cybertruck reminds him of iconic cars like the Lamborghini Countach, DMC DeLorean, and Aston Martin Lagonda from his youth. What he means is that this truck, just like those cars, offers a very sharp design that is very eye-catching.

Following this, he parks the Cybertruck at a parking lot and starts talking about the design highlights of this vehicle. He states that although it looks like a vehicle that can be easily created out of paper, it must have been very hard for engineers and designers to make.

James May compares the Cybertruck with traditional cars and states that those vehicles hide a lot of details with their curves. However, in the Cybertruck, all of the flaws get highlighted because it’s a very angular vehicle with straight lines. To explain his point, he even points out how the line of the fender and the A-pillar does not line up.

James May’s Unique Observation

During the exterior design highlight, he moves on to reveal a unique observation. He states that although this vehicle looks very straight to the naked eye, the engineers and designers have very cleverly made the panels slightly convex to provide it with an appearance that is bigger than it actually is.

Driving Impressions

Following the exterior design tour of the Tesla Cybertruck, James May shares his driving impressions of this electric truck. He highlights that this vehicle uses drive-by-wire, meaning it does not have any linkage between the steering wheel and the wheels. He states that due to this, the vehicle feels very light.

James adds that due to this technology and the four-wheel steering, even with such huge dimensions and weight, it does not feel cumbersome to drive and can be easily maneuvered across the city. He also adds that the visibility is very nice and, overall, it’s a very fun vehicle to drive.

James May’s Final Thoughts

Later in the video, James May concludes that although he likes the Tesla Cybertruck, he would not want to own it. He states that it is very big for his liking. However, he also mentions that he likes how it does not conform to the general rules of the automotive industry and that it is extremely unique in its design and ergonomics.
