Mahindra’s current flagship, the XUV700, is a popular SUV among buyers. The SUV gained attention almost immediately after its launch, and there was a waiting period as long as 2 years. Even today, the waiting period is under 2 months. Since its launch, we have come across several incidents where XUV700 customers have complained about issues they have faced with the SUV. There have been instances where the XUV700 has caught fire as well. Here, we have one such incident from Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, where an XUV700 caught fire while in motion.
The video has been shared by Public Reporter on their YouTube channel as a short. In this video, we see a Mahindra XUV700 with the left side front fender, grille, and bonnet on fire. The fire that started under the bonnet of the SUV completely destroyed it. Upon doing a bit more research, we found that the incident happened in the Greater Noida region of Uttar Pradesh. The SUV caught fire near the Gama sector of Greater Noida.
It appears there was only one person in the car when the SUV caught fire. As per the video, the person was driving the car when he noticed smoke coming from the front of the vehicle. Sensing danger, he immediately applied the brakes and stopped the vehicle. Once he got out of the SUV, he realized the smoke was coming from under the bonnet.
Immediately after the driver got out, the SUV caught fire, and within no time, the fire engulfed the vehicle. The driver did call the fire and rescue department, but by the time the authorities reached the spot, the SUV had completely burned down. The exact reason for this fire is not known at the moment.
This is not the first time we have come across an incident like this. Just a few months ago, a similar incident was reported from Sector 61 in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, where a Mahindra XUV700 caught fire in front of a petrol pump. Just like in this case, the SUV was completely destroyed there as well.

We still don’t know what is causing these fire incidents. In April this year, we came across a case where a 3-month-old Mahindra Thar SUV caught fire minutes after being parked by the owner at an event. He was traveling with his family, and thankfully, no one was in the car at the time of the fire.
The case was reported from Haryana, and after the incident, both the insurance company and the dealership were not providing assistance, leaving the customer stuck between the two. The insurance company claimed that the vehicle caught fire due to a manufacturing defect, while the manufacturer claimed the fire was caused by an external factor.
We are not sure if the owner of this Mahindra XUV700 had installed any aftermarket accessories, because in that case, he can’t claim insurance, as insurance companies do not entertain such claims and consider them as modifications to the stock vehicle.
Hopefully, Mahindra conducts a thorough inspection in these cases, gets to the root cause soon, and resolves it before more such incidents occur.
