North Indian winters are officially here, and we have started seeing videos of snowfall from the mountain states. Every year, thousands of tourists visit the mountains to experience the winters and also to witness snowfall. It is also during this time that we see videos of several accidents and crashes after people lose control of their vehicles on snow. While many of them drive in their 4x4s, there is a majority who drive FWD cars. Even the local taxi drivers use small cars like the Maruti Alto. People often call the Maruti Alto “Lord Alto” because of the way it is driven by experienced drivers in the mountains. Here we have one such video where a Maruti Alto is effortlessly seen climbing up a snow-covered road while 4x4s struggle.

The video has been shared by Hemraj Thakur on his Instagram page. The video was recorded somewhere in Himachal Pradesh. We have been getting reports and videos of heavy snowfall in the state, and this has led to traffic congestion and roadblocks. During this time of the year, people usually prefer 4×4 SUVs, and that is what we see here.
We see a Mahindra Thar climbing up a road that is filled with snow, black ice, and slush. We also see water flowing across the road after the snow melted. This is actually a very tricky spot, as the driver will have to take care of several factors to ensure they don’t go off the road. The driver can’t drive up with momentum, as it might make the car go out of control.
Another issue is that it is a hairpin curve, and the driver is proceeding with caution. The Mahindra Thar climbs up the snowy stretch. The Thar was equipped with AT tires, and they were performing pretty well. The SUV managed to climb up slowly. Next was the Jimny. It looked like a brand-new SUV with off-road tires. Even the Jimny performed well.
However, the Gypsy, which came after this, couldn’t find traction and was unable to climb up. As these vehicles were waiting for their turn to go up, we see a Maruti Alto taking the outer edge of the curve and coming towards the uphill stretch. At first, it looked like the hatchback would not be able to make it to the top. But everyone was surprised when they saw this small car effortlessly climbing up. It managed to do the stretch without any drama.
The way the Alto performed on the snow was pretty impressive, but there is a hidden detail in the video. The reason why the Alto performed so well on the snow was that it was using snow chains. The Maruti Alto, as we know, is a front-wheel drive vehicle. It might be lightweight, but it is still not capable of going off-road or being driven on snow. It may lose traction pretty easily.
This can be extremely dangerous, as it may cause crashes on slippery surfaces like snow. What a snow chain does is offer additional grip to the tires by digging into the snow. This helps the car move forward without any issue. The snow chain, along with the experience of the local driver, made things easier for the Alto, and it turned out to be a great occasion for “Lord Alto” to shine. The comment section under this video is filled with praises for the Alto driver.
Snow is one of the trickiest surfaces to drive on. It is very easy to lose control, and if you are a person driving in the hills for the first time, there are a few things that you should keep in mind. Never drive aggressively in the mountains, especially when there is snow on the road. Sudden acceleration and braking will only make you lose control of the vehicle.
Always maintain a safe speed and try to avoid hard braking. Also, carry snow chains that are suitable for your vehicle. Never try off-roading without the supervision of a local or experienced driver, as you never know what lies under the thick layer of snow. Also, carry essentials like food and water in the car for your own consumption in case you get stuck in a traffic jam or blizzard.
