When it was first launched in India, the Mercedes Benz SL 55 AMG had an ex-showroom price of 2.35 Crore. It resurrected the legendary SL nameplate. The present price hovers around 3 Cr on-road, Mumbai. The vehicle is brought to India as CBUs and is essentially a 2+2 seater roadster with a fabric top. This is the first time since Gen 4 that the SL gets a fabric top.

This triple-layer roof is 21kg lighter than the previous metal roof, can be operated at speeds of up to 60kph, and takes 16 seconds to open or close. It comes in three shades: Black, Dark Red, and Grey. Ranbir’s car has a Black fabric roof.

This is the seventh generation of the SL 55 AMG and sits below the AMG GT Roadster in Mercedes Benz India’s lineup. It has also brought back the iconic 55 name, which was previously seen on the G55 that was on sale till 2012.

The new generation SL 55 is larger than the previous model, and spans 4.7 meters in length. Courtesy of its 2700mm wheelbase, the convertible gets a pair of (compromised) rear seats as well. Key design highlights include  the Panamericana grille, angular LED headlights, a long bonnet with two power domes, and quad exhausts. Standard 20-inch alloy wheels can be upgraded to larger, unique 21-inch alloy wheels.

The SL 55 comes with a powerful 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that delivers 476hp and 700Nm of torque. Paired with a 9-speed automatic gearbox and Mercedes’ 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system, this powertrain can make the roadster sprint from 0-100kph in just 3.9 seconds. The car even has a top speed of 295kph. It also features rear-axle steering for better agility and stability.

Inside the cabin, SL55 AMG owners get features like an 11.9-inch vertically adjustable touchscreen running the latest MBUX operating system, a 12.3-inch LCD driver display, an optional heads-up display, a Burmester sound system, the Airscarf function for added comfort during open-top drives, and an optional AMG Track Pace programme.

The upholstery options include five Nappa leather combinations. There are several premium trims like aluminium and carbon fibre, and owners can also opt between AMG sports and performance seats.

Rivals to the Mercedes Benz SL55 AMG in the Indian market include the Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet (₹2.18 crore) and the Lexus LC 500h (₹2.39 crore).
