Buying a new car is a dream for many. Such plastic covers on the seat were once a common sight in India but, with modern cars things have changed.

However, there are still some who like to do keep the seats wrapped in such plastic covers. Have you ever thought whether this is a good practice or not? Well, it is not and it can actually be a risky thing to do for your health.

We used to see these types of plastic covers on the seat covers mostly in old cars like Maruti Alto, Maruti 800. The purpose of these plastic covers was to protect the fabric from any type of damage while the car was transported from plant to dealership or to customer. In modern cars, they are now using a cloth like recycled material to protect the same.

Many customers used to keep the cover on the seat to ensure that the interior remain clean and feel new even after years. However this is dangerous while driving the car.

If you are sitting in a car with plastic cover on the seats, it can get extremely uncomfortable. Also the plastic sheet would make you move around a lot and that is extremely dangerous while taking turns or making sudden maneuvers or braking.

Some of them even wrap the steering wheel in such materials to reduce the wear and tear. Most cars have airbags and covering the seat and dashboard or even the steering wheel with such plastic material would affect the working of the airbags. They might deploy in case of an accident but, they might not protect you as there is plastic sheet between the airbag and the driver.

When you park you car under direct sun, the plastic cover on the seat starts emitting toxic fumes and that fills up in the cabin. The cabin of a car parked under the sun gets extremely hot and when you get into the car, you inhale these toxic gases. If this happens on a regular basis, it can have health implications.

So, if you are someone or know someone who has been using the plastic sheets on the seat cover or cabin of their car, we would recommend them to take it off. In fact, if you buy a new car and it has plastic covers on the seat cover and cabin, you should ask the dealership staff to take the covers away before delivery.

If you have plans to go for some aftermarket seat covers and accessories, get it installed within a week. Using a plastic cover inside the cabin or on the seats is only going to do more harm than good to you and your car.
