Himachal Pradesh witnessed one of the worst traffic jams involving over 1,000 vehicles due to heavy rainfall. Several vehicles and tourists are stuck in snow, and we have started seeing videos online that show how bad the situation is. Local police and authorities have initiated rescue missions to clear the congestion. It has started to snow in the mountains, and we have also started seeing videos of vehicles sliding on black ice. Here is one such video where several vehicles, including a Kia Seltos, Toyota Fortuner, Maruti Dzire, and Alto, slide and crash into other vehicles near the Atal Tunnel.

The video has been shared by @heyitsrahulm on his Instagram page. In this video, we see a Kia Seltos coming down a slope. There is heavy snowfall in the region, and the road is covered with snow. It looks like black ice has formed on the road, making things difficult for drivers.
The Seltos driver applied the brakes, but they were of no use in such a situation. The SUV slid down the slope, moving towards a Toyota Fortuner that had crashed into another vehicle and stopped moments earlier. The SUV came and crashed into the Fortuner. We can see people trying to push the car away from other vehicles and even attempting to stop it.
None of these efforts made any difference as the vehicles continued to slide. The Kia Seltos crashed into the Fortuner, and the Toyota Fortuner crashed into a Baleno parked in front. It looks like the bonnet of the Fortuner is already damaged, and similar damages are expected on the Kia Seltos as well.
After this, we see the “lord of the hills,” a Maruti Alto, sliding through the snow. It is a taxi vehicle, and it seems like the driver is much more experienced than the tourists. The driver applied the brakes, but the tail of the hatchback slid out, causing the hatchback to start sliding. The car went sideways and crashed into a Maruti Ertiga in front.

In the next clip, we see a Maruti Dzire lose control and slide down a slope on a slippery road. The sedan driver tried his best to avoid crashing but ended up driving the vehicle into a ditch on the left side of the road. The video mentions that all these accidents occurred near the Atal Tunnel.

It is always a good idea to prepare your vehicle for the winter season if you live in a place where snowfall happens. Tyre manufacturers offer winter and snow tyres for vehicles, and there are also accessories like snow chains to help with driving on these tricky surfaces.
As seen in the video, the loss of traction or grip was the major cause of the crashes. Never drive too fast on snow. Also, avoid applying brakes suddenly. Aggressive acceleration and braking will only make things worse for you on snow.
If you brake hard or accelerate hard, it will only make the car go out of control and end in a crash. Also, check the weather forecast and local news before heading to such locations to ensure there are no roadblocks and to avoid such accidents.
