Driving on the wrong side is a major issue in India, and this behavior has caused numerous accidents and problems on the road. Recently, a biker lost his life after crashing into a Mahindra XUV 300 SUV that was driving on the wrong side in Gurugram, Haryana. This is just one of many cases that have surfaced online. In a related incident, a video from Pune shows a cab driver arguing with a car driver for blocking his way while driving on the wrong side of the road.
The video was shared by the YouTube channel “Bad Drivers of Bangalore.” Although the channel is named after Bangalore, this particular video is from Pune, Maharashtra. The footage was captured on the dashcam of a car. In the video, we see the dashcam-equipped car moving slowly through the narrow lanes of Pune city.
As the car approaches an intersection, the driver takes a right turn. It appears to be an intersection without traffic signals. After completing the turn, the car encounters a cab driving on the wrong side of the road. Concrete dividers separate traffic on both sides, designed to prevent confusion.
The cab driver had intentionally driven on the wrong side, and upon seeing the oncoming car, he stopped. The dashcam car also stopped in front of the cab and did not move. In fact, the driver edged the car closer to the cab and parked it there. Both parties remained in their vehicles for a while until the cab driver finally got out.
He began arguing with the car driver, and by this time, the cab had caused a traffic jam. A traffic officer at the scene quickly intervened. As soon as the officer arrived, the cab driver hurried back to his vehicle and attempted to flee. Although the cab driver was fully aware that he was at fault, he chose to argue rather than reverse his car.
This situation could have been easily resolved if the cab driver had simply reversed and returned to his proper lane. After some time, the cab driver got back into his vehicle and left the scene. It seemed there was a passenger in the cab as well. The traffic officer immediately took out his phone and captured photos of the incident.
It is highly likely that the traffic police issued a citation against the cab driver for his irresponsible behavior. Driving on the wrong side of the road has unfortunately become normalized in India. It is an extremely dangerous practice, especially on busy city streets and highways. We’ve seen bikers, tractors, and even heavy vehicles like trucks driving on the wrong side.
In most cases, drivers are too lazy to drive to a designated median cut because it is too far from where they joined the road. Some do it to save fuel. However, in this case, the cab driver simply wanted to overtake the vehicles waiting at the intersection by driving on the wrong side.
If another vehicle had approached the intersection at high speed, it could have crashed into the cab, putting not only the cab driver’s life at risk but also the life of the passenger.
