BMW has launched a new limited-edition version of its popular Z4 roadster in India, and this one brings something that purists have long been waiting for — a manual transmission. Called the Z4 M40i Pure Impulse Edition, this variant marks the first time the Z4 is being offered with a manual gearbox in the country.

With prices starting at ₹96.90 lakh for the automatic and ₹97.90 lakh for the manual (ex-showroom), this special edition comes to India as a fully imported model. It’s aimed squarely at enthusiasts who enjoy the raw, connected feeling of a manual shift and appreciate exclusivity in design and performance.

Performance Meets Engagement

At the heart of the Z4 M40i Pure Impulse Edition lies a 3.0-litre straight-six twin-turbo petrol engine that produces 340 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. Power goes to the rear wheels, delivering a classic, balanced roadster experience.

The automatic version accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, while the manual is only a shade slower at 4.6 seconds. More importantly for driving purists, the six-speed manual transmission — offered here for the first time — adds a new layer of engagement. The gearshifts are paired with hardware upgrades including M-specific components to handle the power more effectively, ensuring the roadster feels sharp and responsive under spirited driving.

A Sporty Look with Subtle Distinction

Design-wise, this edition of the Z4 receives a few tasteful tweaks that distinguish it from the regular model. Two exclusive metallic paint options—Frozen Deep Green and Sanremo Green—add a dash of uniqueness without being flashy.

The car also gets a staggered wheel setup with 19-inch alloys at the front and 20-inch at the rear. These M light alloy wheels feature a striking double-spoke design that complements the Z4’s low-slung stance. Other visual highlights include a redesigned kidney grille with horizontal mesh, vertically stacked LED headlights, slim L-shaped LED tail lamps, and red-painted brake callipers. The use of gloss black accents on the mirrors and door surrounds gives it a slightly more aggressive character, without taking away from the roadster’s elegance.

Inside the Cabin: A Blend of Sport and Sophistication

Step inside, and the Z4 M40i Pure Impulse Edition carries forward BMW’s reputation for driver-focused cabins with a premium touch. The manual variant stands out with Vernasca Cognac leather upholstery featuring contrast stitching, adding warmth to the sporty interior. The automatic version, in comparison, continues with a more understated black leather theme.

The dashboard is dominated by twin 10.25-inch screens — one for the digital instrument cluster and the other for the infotainment system, both powered by BMW’s Operating System 7.0. Features like wireless Apple CarPlay, navigation with 3D maps, and Bluetooth connectivity are all part of the package.

Creature comforts include dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting, electrically adjustable seats with memory function for the driver, and a wireless charging pad. While the standard kit is generous, BMW also offers optional upgrades such as adaptive LED headlights, a Harman Kardon sound system, a head-up display, lumbar support, and even M-branded seat belts for that extra touch of flair.

Focus on Safety and Driving Dynamics

The Z4 M40i Pure Impulse Edition doesn’t skimp on safety. Six airbags, ABS with brake assist, Dynamic Stability Control, Cornering Brake Control, and a tyre pressure monitoring system are all offered as standard. There’s also active cruise control and other driver assistance systems that add convenience on longer drives.

What sets this car apart, though, is how it handles. BMW has equipped it with Adaptive M Sport suspension, M Sport brakes, and a variable sport steering setup. An M Sport differential ensures that power is distributed efficiently between the rear wheels, allowing for a more composed yet thrilling driving experience. Combined with the car’s 50:50 weight distribution, this makes for a roadster that feels just as much at home on winding mountain roads as it does cruising on the highway.

A Unique Space in the Luxury Roadster Segment

In the niche space of luxury convertibles, the Z4 M40i Pure Impulse Edition stands out not just for its design or performance, but for its manual gearbox — a rare offering in this segment. While it competes with models like the Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet, BMW’s focus on driver engagement gives the Z4 a unique appeal.

For those who appreciate the tactility of rowing through gears, the ₹1 lakh premium for the manual variant could feel well worth it. It’s less about numbers and more about the driving feel — something that’s increasingly rare in modern luxury cars.

The Z4 M40i Pure Impulse Edition isn’t about mass appeal. It’s a roadster built for those who enjoy the art of driving, who see value in a manual gearbox, and who want something a little different from the usual fare. With its distinctive styling, solid feature list, and strong performance credentials, this limited-edition Z4 brings back a bit of the old-school thrill — without giving up on modern luxury.
