People following Google Maps to commute while on the road has become a very normal thing. However, we have lately been coming across several incidents where Google Maps has been the reason for accidents and crashes on the road. Google Maps is said to be misleading commuters and making them drive on roads that are under construction. Here we have one such incident from Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras, where a family traveling in a Grand i10 Nios was misled by Google Maps onto an under-construction highway at night. The car crashed into a ditch on the highway.

The video has been shared by News18 Uttar Pradesh on X. The video report mentions that the accident happened to a family from Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly. The family was traveling from Bareilly to Mathura at night when Google Maps took them through a highway that was under construction.
The family or the driver of the car was relying on Google Maps as it was night. The visibility on this road was also low as there were no streetlights. After driving on the highway for some distance, the car crashed into a ditch. On the same same spot, a Kia Sonet also crashed into the head of mud at night. The construction agency usually places heaps of mud on the road to block it.
The car went over the heap of sand or mud and then went ahead and crashed into a bunch of concrete slabs. We are not sure if these concrete slabs were placed to block traffic or if they were there for the drainage system.
The front of the car looks damaged, along with the fender and tires. We are not sure if the car has any major damage to the engine or not. Thankfully, the airbags in this car deployed on time, and the passengers escaped without any major injuries.

The passengers inside the car called the police after the crash for help. The local police then reached the spot and helped them get out of the car. The driver mentions that due to low visibility, he didn’t notice the construction that was going on along the highway. He also mentions that Google Maps was showing them that the road in front of them was clear.
The map didn’t even warn them or give them a diversion or notification about the ongoing construction on this stretch. This is not the first time we have come across an incident like this. In the past, Google Maps has forced people to drive into rivers and canals.
An unfortunate incident was reported from Uttar Pradesh, where three men traveling in a Maruti Suzuki WagonR died after falling off an incomplete bridge at the Bareilly-Budaun border. It was found that these men had been relying on Google Maps for their route, which did not highlight that the bridge was dangerous.
After the crash, four engineers from the Public Works Department (PWD) and one official from Google Maps were arrested for negligence and the deaths of the three men. Another incident from Uttar Pradesh was reported a few weeks ago where Google Maps allegedly led a Tata Tigor car into a canal near Barkapur village in Uttar Pradesh.
