People using Google Maps to travel to new places and getting lost or stuck in areas with no roads has become a common occurrence. However, we have recently been hearing cases of accidents caused by people following Google Maps. We came across an incident last week where a family traveling in a Hyundai Grand i10 Nios crashed into a pile of dirt placed in the middle of the road on an under-construction highway. It appears that Google Maps is still showing the same route to commuters, and we now have another crash from the same under-construction highway in Uttar Pradesh.

As per the reports, a Maruti Swift was traveling towards Barsana, Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. It seems the accident happened at night. The driver and occupants were following Google Maps, and for some reason, it directed them via the highway that is under construction. The car was likely being driven fast as the road was empty at night.
The driver was unaware that the road or highway work was incomplete and that there was a roadblock ahead. The driver crashed into a pile of mud or dirt that had been placed in the middle of the road to prevent vehicles from passing. The Maruti Swift collided with the pile, likely went airborne, and landed on the other side.
The front of the hatchback is severely damaged. The bumper and front grille are missing. Reports mention that the occupants in the car were seriously injured and were taken to a nearby hospital after the incident. This is not the first time something like this has happened on this stretch. In fact, it is the third incident in three days.
There are no signboards or diversion boards on this under-construction highway in Hathras to warn drivers. If the authorities had taken necessary actions on time, this crash might have been avoided.
Another issue with these highways is the lack of proper lighting. This is not just a problem on this highway; most highways in India lack proper streetlights.
Drivers often use high beams at night to improve visibility, but that is sometimes insufficient. This particular spot in Hathras has become infamous for accidents. As mentioned earlier, a Grand i10 Nios and a Kia Sonet had also crashed into the pile in a similar manner.

We have come across similar incidents in the past where people have tragically lost their lives. One such accident was reported from Uttar Pradesh, where a Maruti WagonR fell into a river from a bridge that was under construction. The driver and occupants were following Google Maps, which showed the incomplete bridge as the fastest route. Three people, including the driver, died in this tragic accident.
Google Maps did not highlight that the bridge was under construction, and the driver took the car onto the bridge as this was the fastest route to get to the destination. Following the crash, four engineers from the Public Works Department (PWD) and one official from Google Maps were arrested for negligence and the deaths of the three men.
