honda cbr650r abs vs cow on highway

ABS (Anti-lock braking system) saves the life of a Honda CBR650R rider when a cow suddenly shows up on the highway; The biker escapes from a slight margin and manages to avoid the crash due to the quick response.

Indian roads are full of dangers, be it recklessly driven vehicles or stray cattle freely roaming across the streets. These conditions can often result in dangerous life-threatening accidents in no time if proper precautions are not followed while travelling on the road.

Road user behaviour is another aspect of accidents which often goes undiscussed and unattended. To tackle such situations, the vehicles are kitted with a host of active and passive safety features.

These include airbags, ABS and traction control system amongst others. Apart from this, the skills and situational awareness of the driver/rider also play an important role in ensuring a safe journey. So today we have come across a YouTube video by ‘Magician ad’, where he avoided a crash due to his presence of mind as well as the good ABS response.

ABS, the short form of Anti-Lock Braking System is a safety system installed in the brakes of vehicles which prevents the tyres from skidding under hard emergency braking. ABS is very important for cars, however, its significance in bikes is multiplied, as the chances of wheels locking and skidding are very high.

Along with this, the risk of injuries on a bike is quite high as compared to four-wheelers. So the ABS uses various speed sensors which are well-calibrated to adjust the braking pressure according to the requirements.

In case the wheels are on the verge of locking, the sensors will send a command to the ABS unit, which then will reduce the braking force, thereby preventing the wheels from locking. ABS not only is a safety feature but is also very useful to enhance the overall braking performance and minimize the stopping distance.

In this case, the rider on the Honda CBR 650R is going at around 70-80 kmph on a highway with very less traffic. At one point, he is behind a truck and seems to be planning to overtake it. This is the point where things went south, as the truck suddenly changes its lane, in order to avoid a cow, which then comes in the path of the biker. The rider realise the situation and applied the brakes to avoid the collision.

All thanks to the powerful brakes of the superbikes along with the ABS which worked well to stop the two-wheeler at the correct time. Here, the ABS prevented the wheels from locking under hard braking and the rider was able to avoid a crash.

Talking about the specs of the bike, the Honda CBR 650R is powered by a 648.72cc four-cylinder petrol engine putting out 87 bhp and 57.5 Nm of peak torque. It is priced at Rs. 9.35 lakh (ex-showroom) in India.
