We all know Hyundai as a manufacturer that offers feature-loaded cars. It has been present in the Indian market for over 2 decades and has made its place in the hearts of customers. The South Korean car manufacturer is currently the second-largest car manufacturer in the country. During the initial years when Hyundai was still testing the ground, they launched several models to see how customers would react to them. One such model was the Terracan. It was actually the first SUV that the manufacturer ever offered in India. It was available for sale for a very short span of time. It is a rare car to spot on our roads, but here we have a well-maintained example of the same on video.
The video has been shared by Baiju N Nair on their YouTube channel. In this video, the presenter takes a closer look at a well-maintained Terracan 4×4 SUV in Kerala. Hyundai launched the Terracan back in 2003. At that time, Hyundai was known as a brand that made hatchbacks. For the same reason, it never caught buyers’ attention for some reason. Within 3 years after the launch, the SUV was discontinued due to low sales.
The video starts by talking about the exterior look of the SUV. Unlike the SUVs that we have in the market now, the Terracan does not look too bold and butch. It gets a soft-roader-like design with curved edges. The current owner of the SUV actually made minor customizations to the SUV. He did this without losing the original character of the car. The headlamps are now HID units, and the fog lamps are now projector LEDs. On the side profile, this SUV also gets a boxy design. It looks huge, and the sloping bonnet and the hood scoop add to the character.

The lower part of the Terracan came with black cladding. The owner was not a huge fan of this, so he completely painted this part in body color. This gives the car a premium look. The beadings on the door and the door handles are the only visible chrome elements here. Unlike many SUVs that we have in the market now, the Terracan offered a large window for the third-row passengers too. This means the cabin felt airy even for the last-row passengers.
As we move to the rear, we see the original bumper with an aftermarket parking camera installed in it. Everything else remains stock. The video then shows the interior. The car gets a well-maintained interior with new seat covers and an aftermarket touchscreen infotainment system. The steering wheel and the dashboard have a glossy wooden finish.
As mentioned above, the Terracan is a 4×4 SUV. There is a rotary knob to engage 4L and 4H, placed next to the parking brake. The car offers a very commanding seating position and other features like automatic climate control. There are no bottle holders on the door as well. This SUV uses a 2.9-liter CRDI diesel engine that generates 148 Bhp and 343 Nm of peak torque. It was only offered with a manual gearbox as automatics were not very popular during that time. The engine feels very refined, and the owner of this SUV even uses it today for long drives.
