Tata Nano EV By Jayem Automotive With 150 Kilometer Range Is A Perfect City Car [Video]

Tata Nano was launched in the market with the aim of making car ownership affordable for middle-class families. It was marketed as the cheapest car in the world, but that did not work in its favor. The Nano was the brainchild of Mr. Ratan Tata. Lately, we have been hearing a lot about electric cars. Many mainstream manufacturers have started selling EVs, while some workshops also offer custom-built EVs based on ICE vehicles. Here we have a video of a Tata Nano that has been converted into an electric car by Coimbatore-based Jayem Automotive.

The video has been shared by Talking Cars, and the presenters share how this small electric car feels to drive. The Nano EV seen in the video is a properly engineered vehicle. The car was made by Jayem Automotive, the same company that worked on Tata’s JTP version of Tiago and Tigor. The car is no longer called Nano; it now comes with the badge Jayem Neo. The Neo is based on the XM version of Tata Nano. On the outside, the car looks just like a regular Nano, and the interior is the same. The only noticeable change inside the cabin is the new digital instrument cluster developed for this car.

Tata used to offer the basic shell of a Nano along with essential components like electrical and mechanical components to Jayem Automotive. Once they received the car, they installed an EV kit in it. The work on this project started long before electric cars became popular in the market. This car was specifically built for fleet buyers. They got in touch with a cab aggregator, and the cars were prepared for use as taxis. As there were no subsidies or concessions from the state or central government available during that time, launching a car like this for the public didn’t make sense, as it would have a high price tag.

Jayem received an order for around 400-450 vehicles from the cab aggregator, but when the vehicles were delivered, the country was going through the pandemic. Not many people knew about this car. Even today, there are people who wouldn’t know that a car like this exists. The Jayem Neo is a low-power electric car powered by a 17.7 kWh battery pack. The battery pack is placed under the driver and co-passenger seat of the Nano, safely sealed inside a metal case to avoid accidents. The Nano EV supports fast charging, but the port is different from the ones we see on modern cars. It uses a GBT port, and the 15 AMP charger has a regular port. Both these ports are placed under the bonnet.

The video mentions that the car feels a lot more refined than before. The ICE version of the Nano was not refined, and the EV solves that problem. It feels peppy and also comes with a Sport mode to improve performance. The car has a top speed of around 80-85 kmph, which is sufficient for driving inside the city. Nano is a perfect city car that can be parked almost anywhere and can go through tight spaces and narrow alleys. The electric motor is mounted at the rear, and it is still a rear-wheel-drive car. The 15 kW motor generates about 23 bhp and around 45 Nm of torque. The car has a certified range of 200 km, but the instrument cluster shows around 164 km when fully charged. The Nano EV is expected to return around 150 km range in real-world conditions, which is more than enough for a city car.
