EXCLUSIVE! India-Spec MG5 And MG4 EV Details Revealed!

JSW MG Motor India has a slew of launches planned for the near future. The carmaker is known to keep a firm focus on the launch and retail sales of ‘New Energy Vehicles’—which would comprise EVs, hybrids, and alternate-fuel vehicles. The Cyberster electric sportscar would be the next big launch. MG has been tight-lipped about further launches or details of upcoming vehicles. We have, however, managed to source the powertrain details of two highly anticipated MG electric cars that could launch in the upcoming years- MG5 and MG4.

MG4 Hatchback Specifications And Details

The MG4 would be a premium hatchback with a striking design and a comfy, feature-packed cabin. The India-spec would come with a 64 kWh battery pack. Globally there are two battery packs available on the MG4- a 51-kWh and the bigger 64 kWh. The global car gets a Lithium-ion NMC battery which is exceptionally flat and belongs to the ‘One pack’ battery system.

For the Indian model, however, things could be slightly different. Post the partnership with JSW, MG has been very particular about local manufacturing and increased localisation. Thus, it is very likely that the India-spec could go with a better, more modern LFP battery pack ( likely sourced from Tata). We have been told that the India-spec would have a maximum driving range of 450 km.

MG4 EV platform

The MG4 is underpinned by the E2 platform (successor to the MG Marvel’s E1 platform). Now, this is the internal codename of the architecture. Interestingly, this platform has different names in different markets. Back home in China, it is called the ‘Nebula’ platform. In Europe, it is branded as the Modular Scalable Platform or MSP. Some also call it the Super platform as well. It remains to be seen if MG will call it by a different name in  India!

The rear-mounted electric motor will be able to produce 204 PS and 250 Nm. 0-100 kph is claimed to be done in 7.9 seconds. The vehicle will have an RWD layout and a 50:50 weight distribution. Many international reviews quote it to be a fun-to-drive car. The hatchback is expected to come in three variants- SE, SE Long Range and Trophy (names may vary upon launch).

Talking of charging, the battery pack will support multiple charging options. It will have a 6.67 kW AC fast charger. 10-80% DC charging will take an hour.

The most striking aspect of the MG4 would be its futuristic design. We have seen it in the flesh and the EV looks stunning. It is pitched as a true global EV and the design complements this claim quite well. Key highlights are a low and wide stance, aerodynamic dual-spoiler and a flowing two-tone roof.

Outgoing generation MG5

The MG5 is an electric station wagon that’s expected to hit the Indian market sometime next year. MG is also known to be working on its next generation and it could be the new wagon that makes an India entry. It too will likely be based on the MSP architecture.

From the data that we have, the India-spec could come with a 61 kWh battery pack that offers a range of around 485 km per charge. The vehicle will have a FWD layout and 0-100 kph will be done in 7.7 seconds. The powertrain will be able to produce 156 PS and 280 Nm. More details of this vehicle are expected to be out closer to launch.

Expected Debut Details

MG could launch these EVs in India in 2025. There has, however, been no word yet on the launch timelines. We expect to see these vehicles on display at the upcoming Bharat Mobility Expo.
