The Kia Carens has earned its place in India’s MPV segment since its launch in 2022, combining practicality, versatility, and a clean design. Now, Kia is set to widen its appeal with the Clavis, a more premium and stylish sibling that has just been unveiled for the Indian market. This isn’t a typical update or facelift. Instead, the Clavis joins the lineup as a new offering, aimed at buyers looking for a blend of utility and modern flair. While the Carens continues to focus on practicality and value, the Clavis brings in added tech, bolder design, and SUV-inspired styling. Let’s take a closer look at how the two compare.
Bolder Look with SUV Influences
The Clavis moves away from the Carens’ safe, conservative styling with a more aggressive and distinctive design. Up front, it features a slimmer grille flanked by sharp, triangular LED headlights, drawing inspiration from Kia’s global EV models. In contrast, the Carens sports a wider grille with chrome accents and more traditional lighting.
Along the sides, the Clavis gets sportier character lines and new dual-tone alloy wheels, replacing the simpler 16-inch wheels of the Carens. At the rear, the Clavis introduces full-width connected LED tail lamps, giving it a modern and upscale appearance. In comparison, the Carens sticks to split tail lamp units.
The Clavis also adopts SUV-like design cues, such as black body cladding, silver skid plates, and a more upright stance. The result is a vehicle that blurs the lines between an MPV and a crossover, appealing to those who want their family car to make a statement.

The instrument cluster in the Clavis is a full 10.25-inch digital unit, compared to the semi-digital setup in the Carens. The infotainment screen is also larger, moving up to 12.3 inches from the 10.25-inch unit in the Carens. Features like dual-zone climate control, a 360-degree camera, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are exclusive to the Clavis. It also comes with a panoramic sunroof, which is not available on the Carens.

Kia hasn’t changed the engine lineup for the Clavis, choosing instead to stick with the proven powertrains already available in the Carens. The Carens is currently priced between ₹10.6 lakh and ₹19.5 lakh (ex-showroom), depending on the variant. The Clavis is likely to carry a slight premium, expected to fall in the ₹11–21 lakh range. This is similar to what Maruti has done with the Ertiga and the more upmarket XL6 – offering the same fundamentals with added comfort and style.
Target Buyers: Same Family, Different Preferences
The Carens continues to appeal to budget-conscious families, particularly in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, who value space, practicality, and peace of mind. The Clavis, on the other hand, is positioned to attract urban buyers who want a more stylish ride with modern tech features. Initial dealer feedback indicates that early Clavis bookings are coming from working professionals in metro cities – people who see it as a feature-rich family car that doesn't feel like a compromise.
Two Models, One Clever Strategy
Kia’s decision to introduce the Clavis alongside the Carens shows a clear understanding of India’s diverse buyer base. Rather than replacing the Carens, the Clavis adds a new layer to Kia’s presence in the MPV space. By offering two models with the same core strengths but different flavours, Kia is ensuring it caters to both value-driven and premium-seeking customers. A similar approach can be seen in the case of Syros and Sonet as well.
The Carens has already crossed the two-lakh sales mark, indicating solid demand. Whether the Clavis can replicate that success will depend on how well it delivers on its promise of style and substance. So far, the inclusion of ADAS, the panoramic sunroof, and connected lighting suggests Kia is pulling the right levers.
