Kia India is known to launch its newest SUV offering – the Syros – on December 19th. Ahead of the same, the company has now released another video teasing the upcoming SUV. It reveals the name and shows a vague outline of the vehicle and manages to give the impression that the Syros would be a futuristic product, or as the carmaker says’ an evolution of SUVs’.
The video starts by showing what looks like a comet ( the actual one, not the car!) heading towards the Earth. Moments later we see an explosion in the night sky and soon get to know that it was in fact, a space-ship. This interplanetary vehicle is shown to form the outline of the Syros. Kia aims to go vocal about the radical nature of the Syros’ design and we know why…
Last month Kia India released the first official teaser of Syros. It gave us a quick look at some key design highlights of its side profile. We got to see a silhouette that looked more like an MPV than an SUV. A thick B-pillar can be seen separating the front and rear sections of the design and the vehicle probably has a seamlessly integrated C pillar too. This shift in design philosophy from a strict SUV to an SUV-MPV hybrid (a fluid SUV probably) could be what the company tries to call the ‘ evolution’.
Kia Syros: What Do We Know About It Yet?
In Kia India’s portfolio, the Syros will sit between the Sonet and Seltos. The manufacturer is trying to bridge the tiny gap that exists between two of its best-selling models. Indicating an imminent launch, several test mules have been spotted over the past few months.
Mule sightings so far, have revealed two sets of wheels- 16 inch diamond-cut alloys and 17-inch 6-spoke triangular alloy wheels. It remains to be seen if both of these would make it to series production and what variant differentiations would these bring along.
The design highlights to be expected are a floating roof design, flush type door handles, vertical LED DRLs, L-shaped LED tail lights, roof rails and a fuel lid that sits on the left side of the vehicle. It is unlikely that this vehicle gets connected LED tail lamps. There could however, be a reflector strip instead, more about which will only be revealed at launch.
Sightings so far have given out limited information on the interior design and feature array. The Kia Syros will likely come with two 10.25-inch screens- one for infotainment and the other for instrumentation0- with a connected design.
Other features and tech expected on the SUV are a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, leatherette upholstery, climate control, selectable drive modes, a powered front seat, and high-quality Bose audio. Going by how the Sonet and Seltos have it, it makes sense to expect an ADAS suite as well. Six airbags, ABS, EBD, front parking sensors, 360-degree camera etc would further boost safety offered.
In powertrains, the Syros will have three options- 1.2L NA petrol, 1.0 turbocharged petrol and 1.5 diesel. These, if you notice are the same as what you get on the Sonet. Transmission options will also remain identical.
Kia will also launch an all-electric version of the Syros in the future. The different alloy wheel designs could also be due to this- the EV could get aerodynamic wheels while the ICE versions could do with the other design. No data on the specifications of the electric powertrain is known. Rumours, however, say that the EV will be able to return range figures of around 350 km per charge. (The real-world numbers could fall in the 270-300 km bracket).
