While most people in India love the Land Rover Defender for its brute road presence and luxurious interiors, a very few fraction of its owners use its true potential as a no-nonsense off-roader. High on luxury and premium appeal, the Land Rover Defender is well-known for its off-roading prowess, with it claiming segment-best off-roading features, including its 900mm water wading capacity – currently the highest among all passenger vehicles sold in India. A Defender owner from Chennai tried to show off this virtue of the SUV by driving it over a flooded road with knee-level water.

In an Instagram reel shared by a user named “mohankumartoday”, a white-coloured Land Rover Defender is seen passing effortlessly through a flooded road in Chennai. Southern India is currently facing the after-effects of a cyclone, which has resulted in flood-like situations in Chennai and other coastal towns of Tamil Nadu.

In one of the flooded roads of Chennai, the Land Rover Defender owner successfully showcased that how the Defender can serve as a perfect vehicle to crawl through such roads with its segment-leading water-wading capacity.

In the video, the Defender owner uses the drive mode selector button placed in the lower centre console of the SUV’s cabin to select the Wade program. This drive mode allows the Land Rover Defender to attain a water-wading capacity of up to 900mm, with the sensors able to trigger if the water level reaches 100mm from the surface.

The Defender owner claims that the road was filled with knee-level water, though in the video, the Defender drives over the flooded road like a child’s play.

The video starts with a disclamatory warning of “Defender in Chennai flood go wrong”. However, towards the end of the video, the warning seems irrelevant, as the water level here is seen till the height of the wheel centre caps, allowing the Defender to easily pass through the water-logged road.

Besides a high water wading capacity of 900mm, the Defender also claims a ground clearance of 291mm, which is also among the best in the SUV category.

The Land Rover Defender is being offered in three body styles – Defender 90 (three-door), Defender 110 (five-door) and Defender 130 (five-door with long wheelbase). While the water wading capacity and ground clearance remain the same in all three versions, the approach and departure angles change due to varying wheelbases.

Available with 2.0-litre turbo-petrol, 3.0-litre turbo-petrol, 5.0-litre supercharged petrol and 3.0-litre diesel engine choices, the Land Rover Defender lineup starts at Rs 93.55 lakh (ex-showroom, India).
