Mahindra & Mahindra closed the financial year on a strong note, posting a 23% year-on-year growth in sales for March 2025. The company sold 83,894 vehicles during the month, reinforcing its dominant position in India’s fast-growing SUV market. While volume growth remained a key highlight, the spotlight was also on the XUV700 Ebony Edition, which sold out within six hours of launch—yet another sign of how Indian car buyers are gravitating toward premium and distinctive offerings.

Let’s break down the brand’s performance, the factors fuelling its growth, and what made the limited-run Ebony Edition such a hot ticket.

SUVs Continue to Power Mahindra’s Growth

Mahindra’s product strategy remains laser-focused on SUVs—and it’s paying off. Every single domestic passenger vehicle sold by the company in March 2025 was an SUV. A total of 48,048 SUVs were sold during the month, marking an 18% increase over the same period last year. Leading the charge were popular models like the Scorpio-N, Thar, and XUV700.

Across FY25, Mahindra crossed a key milestone—selling over 5.5 lakh SUVs in a single financial year for the first time, a 20% jump compared to FY24.

The commercial vehicle segment posted mixed results. While the 2–3.5-ton category grew by 23% (18,958 units), heavier trucks above 3.5 tons saw a slight decline of 4.4%.

XUV700 Ebony Edition: Six Hours to Sold Out

The XUV700 Ebony Edition, launched on 17 March 2025, was a standout in every sense. Priced between ₹19.64 lakh and ₹24.14 lakh (ex-showroom), the variant featured exclusive styling and top-end features that clearly struck a chord with Indian buyers. The entire allocation was snapped up within hours.

What set the Ebony Edition apart? It was designed for buyers looking for something unique without compromising on core features. Its stealth black paint job, blacked-out grille, 18-inch alloys, and all-black leatherette interiors gave it a distinctive presence on the road. Under the hood, it retained the powerful 2.0-litre turbo petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines from the standard XUV700.

Despite being priced only ₹15,000 above the regular AX7 and AX7 L variants, the Ebony Edition included premium features like ADAS, Sony 3D audio, and ventilated seats—a value proposition that proved hard to resist.

Rural Strength and Urban Aspirations

One of Mahindra’s biggest advantages is its appeal across diverse geographies. While urban India continues to favour tech-laden, stylish SUVs like the XUV700 and Thar, rural demand is rising sharply, especially for models like the Bolero and Scorpio Classic. Better infrastructure, growing aspirations, and easier financing are pushing more rural buyers toward SUVs instead of small hatchbacks or sedans.

The Bolero, with 10,347 units sold in March (+8.4% YoY), remains the backbone of Mahindra’s rural portfolio. Meanwhile, the three-wheeler segment, often an indicator of last-mile demand, posted a healthy 47% year-on-year growth, hinting at Mahindra’s deepening rural footprint.

Model-Wise Takeaways:

Among individual models, the Scorpio range (N and Classic) led the pack with 15,151 units, registering a massive 72.4% YoY growth. The Thar and XUV700 also contributed significantly to the brand’s premium push, together accounting for over 12,600 units.

What’s Ahead: Balancing Scale and Style

Mahindra’s playbook seems to be working—offer rugged, reliable SUVs to rural buyers while wooing urban customers with feature-loaded, limited-run editions. As the brand prepares for future launches like the five-door Thar Armada and the Electric Origin SUV, it is clear that Mahindra is not just chasing volumes but also building desirability.

However, to maintain momentum, the company will need to revitalise its compact SUV and electric vehicle portfolios, which are currently underperforming. With more Indian buyers considering EVs, Mahindra’s next-gen electric offerings in FY26 will play a crucial role in shaping its growth story.
