3 Door Mahindra Thar Gets Rs. 1.5 Lakh Discounts: ROXX Effect!

The arrival of the 5 door Mahindra Thar ROXX means that demand for the older model has reduced. Dealers are scrambling to clear stocks of the 3 door Thar as most new buyers are likely to opt for the 5 door version given its greater practicality, a larger feature set and of course, higher comfort levels. Not surprisingly, the 3 door Mahindra Thar is now available at discounts of up to Rs. 1.5 lakh.

The 1.5 lakh rupee discount is being offered on the 2.0 LX Petrol AT RWD (rear wheel drive), 1.5 LX Diesel MT RWD, 2.0 LX Petrol MT 4WD (4 wheel drive), 2.0 LX Petrol AT 4WD, 2.2 LX Diesel MT 4WD and 2.2 LX Diesel AT 4WD. The 1.5 AX OPT Diesel MT RWD variant gets a discount of Rs 1.36 lakh. 1.5 and 2.2 here denote engine capacities of the diesel engines while 2.0 denotes the engine capacity of the petrol engine.

Notably, this is the first time in the 3 door Thar’s four year history that such massive discounts are being offered. In the run up to the 5 door Mahindra Thar ROXX’s launch, the 3 door Thar was available with a maximum discount of Rs. 65,000.

Apart from the steep discounts that are now on offer on both petrol and diesel versions of the 3-door Mahindra Thar, waiting periods have drastically reduced as well. The 3 door model, especially in 4X4 trim, is available off the shelf across many Mahindra dealers, a far cry from the days when the same SUV commanded waiting times of over a year.

That status, is now likely to be taken by the 5 door Thar ROXX. While Mr. Rajesh Jejurikar, the CEO of Mahindra’s auto division noted that they’re gearing up to produce 8,000-10,000 units of the Thar 3 door and Thar ROXX 5 door models each month, demand is likely to stay elevated for the 5 door model at least in the next few months.

Notably, official bookings for the 5 door Thar ROXX will commence from the 2nd of October 2024, following which deliveries will commence from the 12th of October, which also happens to be the auspicious occasion of Dusshera. Many Mahindra dealers across the country are said to be taking ‘unofficial’ bookings for the Thar ROXX, promising customers early delivery.

Coming back to the 3 door Thar, the SUV is available with 3 engine options – a 1.5 liter turbo diesel (117 Bhp-300 Nm), a 2.2 liter turbo diesel (130 Bhp-300 Nm) and a 2 liter turbo petrol (150 Bhp-300 Nm on MT trims/320 Nm on AT trims).

The Mahindra Thar 3 Door soft top is the most affordable convertible money can buy in India – a unique selling proposition that has no competition, literally.

While the smaller diesel engine gets a 6 speed manual gearbox as standard and drives the rear wheels of the SUV, the 2.2 liter diesel is available only on the 4X4 variants, but with both 6 speed manual and torque converter automatic gearboxes.

On the other hand, Mahindra has shown imaginative product planning by offering the Thar 3 Door petrol in both rear wheel drive (slightly more fuel efficient) and four wheel drive options.

The rear wheel drive petrol model gets the 6 speed torque converter automatic gearbox as standard while with both 6 speed manual and torque converter automatic gearbox options are offered on the four wheel drive version.

The 3 door Thar is available with hard top and convertible soft top versions, and is the only affordable car in India to get the convertible option. So, folks who want the wind-in-the-hair motoring experience have no other alternative than to bring home a 3 door Thar. This is also why the 5 door Thar ROXX isn’t likely to get a convertible option even in future.

To keep both models distinct from each other, Mahindra has also held back from introducing the 1.5 liter turbo diesel engine on the 5 door model, and also a four wheel drive option for the petrol trims of the Thar ROXX. In future though, both these versions are likely to make a an entry into the Thar ROXX’s variant line up.
