Mahindra launched the 5-door Thar aka Thar Roxx in India, on August 15, 2024. Initially, only the prices for the 4×2 variants were disclosed. Now, Mahindra has revealed the pricing for the 4×4 variants of the Roxx. The base diesel 4×2 variant starts at ₹13.99 lakh (ex-showroom), while the entry-level 4×4 diesel variant is priced at ₹18.79 lakh (ex-showroom). The top-spec ROXX AX7L 4×4 automatic variant has an ex-showroom price of ₹22.49 lakh.
Unlike the three-door that gets 4×4 on both petrol and diesel variants, the Roxx gets the off-road hardware only on the diesel variants. The petrol comes with a 4×2 setup alone.
The 4×4 variants come with a price premium of approximately ₹1.8-2 lakh over their 4×2 counterparts, with no additional differences in features or safety equipment. This essentially means that the price premium is just for off-road hardware.
Thar Roxx 4×4 Specifications
The Thar Roxx 4×4 is powered by the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine that produces 175hp and 370Nm of peak torque. The diesel 4×2 variants feature a slightly less powerful version of the same, generating 152hp and 330Nm. The five-door SUV comes with Mahindra’s 4XPLOR System, which includes an electronic locking differential and various terrain modes like Snow, Sand, and Mud.
The 4×4 variants also come equipped with two useful off-road features: ‘Smart Crawl’ and ‘Intelli Turn’. Smart Crawl acts as an off-road cruise control system, working between 2.5kph and 30kph, and helps the Roxx to do climbs effortlessly.
Intelliturn, on the other hand, helps the vehicle make tight turns easily, by locking the rear inner wheel based on the steering direction. This feature is limited to speeds under 15kph and can only be activated for 15 seconds at a time.
Petrol 4×2 Specifications
In addition to the diesel engine, the Thar Roxx 4×2 is available with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, producing 162hp and 330Nm with the manual gearbox, or 177hp and 380Nm with the automatic. Both the petrol and diesel engines come with a 6-speed manual gearbox, along with an optional 6-speed torque converter automatic.
Price Overlap And Possible Approaches
Mahindra’s aggressive pricing strategy places the Thar Roxx in direct competition with the 3-door Thar and the Scorpio N. With prices overlapping between these models, some level of internal competition is inevitable.
The 3-door Thar is currently priced between ₹11.35 lakh and ₹17.60 lakh, aligning with the mid-range Roxx variants. Dealers have already reported customer interest shifting from the 3-door to the 5-door Roxx, which offers greater comfort and practicality.
Interestingly, the Thar Roxx is also priced close to certain variants of the Scorpio N, despite the latter being positioned as a more premium D-segment SUV, often referred to by Mahindra as the “Big Daddy of SUVs.” The Scorpio N is priced between ₹13.85 lakh and ₹24.54 lakh, yet the Roxx holds an edge in ride quality and handling, particularly with its wider track offering better dynamics.
Who should buy what? Both the Thar Roxx and Scorpio N are suitable for families, but they serve different purposes. If you’re looking for a family car that’s also capable of off-roading, the Roxx is the better choice. However, if you’re simply after a large SUV, the Scorpio N is more fitting.
Even Competes With Mid-Size SUVs
With its smart pricing, the Roxx also faces competition from mid-size SUVs such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Honda Elevate, Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, MG Astor, Skoda Kushaq, and Volkswagen Taigun. Niche rivals include the Force Gurkha 5-door and Maruti Jimny.
