Mahindra launched the all-new Thar Roxx on the 15th of August, this year. Bookings will begin on October 3rd. Ahead of the same, Mahindra has announced that the first-ever Thar Roxx to enter production will be auctioned off. Proceeds of this will be donated to a good cause. We aren’t told what the noble cause is, though.

The highly anticipated auction will commence from September 12th onwards. The carmaker had done something similar with the 3-door Thar. The winning bid for the SUV back then was a whopping 1.1 Crore. Akash Minda from Delhi acquired the first-ever Thar (LX petrol automatic ) for the pricey sum. Back in its day, the three-door had amassed over 5,500 bids from over 500 locations within the country.

VIN 001 Thar Roxx: What Do We Know?

Like the first 3-door unit, the VIN001 of Roxx could also be based on the top-spec variant. Though unclear at the moment, it could get bespoke cosmetic enhancements including #1 badges. Mahindra notably has the habit of equipping the Thars- both 3-door and 5-door, with metal plates inside the cabins that read VIN numbers and ‘Made in India with pride’. Some reports also say that the company could also offer the VIN 001 Thar Roxx with colour and powertrains as suggested by the winning bidder.

Thar Roxx: Quick Look At It

The Thar Roxx is available in 7 colours: Stealth Black, Burnt Sienna, Deep Forest, Battleship Grey, Nebula Blue, Tango Red and Everest White. It gets significant restyling and dimensional changes compared to the 3-door counterpart. It is taller, wider, and longer than the 3-door, with a considerably longer wheelbase. It is not just the addition of two doors that has happened.

The Roxx is based on Mahindra’s new-age M-GLYDE platform- which is an improved derivative of the Scorpio N chassis.  LED headlamps with integrated DRLs, a new 6-slat (6-pack) grille, tweaked wheel arches, a new roof line, fresh-looking C and D pillars, a reworked tail, and new 19-inch wheels are the key design highlights. Unlike the 3-door, the Roxx gets an all-metallic body.

Extensive focus has been given to ensuring ample comfort and luxury inside the cabin. The base variant gets a dark colourway, whereas the higher trims offer White cabin colour schemes. Features on the top-spec include the segment’s largest panoramic sunroof, wireless charger, 10.25-inch touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, automatic AC, 360-degree camera, ventilated seats etc. The vehicle also comes with a bunch of safety features and level 2 ADAS.

At launch, the Thar Roxx is available with the choice of two familiar powertrains- the 2.2 mHawk diesel engine and 2.0 mStallion turbocharged petrol engine. These engines are also seen on various other models like the Scorpio N and Thar 3 door. However, on the Roxx, these get different states of tune.

The diesel engine produces up to 173 bhp and 370 Nm of torque. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and 6AT.  The 2.0-liter mStallion Turbo Petrol Direct Injection (TGDi) engine, on the other hand, churns out 175 bhp and 380 Nm. Both manual and automatic gearboxes are available as well. AWD is not standard and is offered only as options on select variants.

The Roxx gets a carefully engineered suspension setup that uses technologies like FDD. It delivers supreme ride quality and body control. The SUV has also been certified by ARAI to deliver mileage figures of up to 12.4 kpl in the petrol manual form. The diesel in its lower state of tune, is certified to deliver ARAI-certified mileage of 15.20km/l.

In terms of pricing and placement, Mahindra seems to have played it smart. There are a number of variants and trims, smartly placed sealing the price gaps between C-SUVs and an entry-level Scorpio N rival. The Roxx has introductory ex-showroom prices of Rs 12.99-20.49 lakh, for its 4×2 variants. Prices of 4×4 trims are yet to be announced. The SUV has started reaching dealerships. Deliveries would begin in October, during Vijayadashami.
