Mahindra has launched the 5-door Thar aka Thar Roxx in the Indian market. Prices for most 4×2 variants are already out, and the SUV is garnering much public interest. The manufacturer will start accepting bookings from October 3rd. Test drives will begin in September. This essentially means that The Roxx is least accessible to the public right now. All they have are images, reviews and opinions about it from various media houses and influencers. Intending to capitalise on this situation, Mahindra has been releasing a series of teasers and TVCs highlighting various aspects of the Roxx. The latest commercial shows all the key details.
The video shows seems to be a render made by MIDS. It shows the Roxx in the most striking of its colours, against various CGI backdrops. Design features like the LED headlamps, C-shaped LED DRLs, grille, front and rear bumpers, LED tail lamps, five dual spoke 19-inch alloy wheels, and the controversial C pillar are all shown in great detail.
The video also shows the cabin colourway, materials used, design and features offered by the SUV. The Roxx uses premium trims and materials in its cabin. It has features like a 10.25-inch touchscreen, a 9-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a wireless charger, and an electronic parking brake.
There are ventilated seats, a motorized driver’s seat, selectable drive modes, climate control, and Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) offered as well. A standout feature is the panoramic sunroof—the largest in its segment—which enhances the cabin’s ambience and prevents it from feeling claustrophobic.
The SUV offers two engine options at launch: a 2.2L mHawk diesel and a 2.0 mStallion turbo petrol- both available with manual and automatic transmissions. The diesel delivers 172.5 bhp and 370 Nm of torque, paired with an in-house developed 6-speed manual transmission. According to the company, the vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 60 kph in just 4.8 seconds. The top-spec petrol tune generates 177PS and 380 Nm.
Recently, ARAI released the official mileage figures of Mahindra Thar Roxx. Despite using the same set of engines, the 5-door Thar is claimed to deliver lower fuel efficiency than the corresponding variants of Scorpio N. The 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine generates 175 bhp and 380 Nm of torque. It is available in four variants: MX1, MX3, MX5, and AX7 L.
The MX1 variant is the only one equipped with a manual transmission, while the MX5 and AX7 L can be had with either a manual or an automatic gearbox. The ROXX with turbocharged petrol engine and manual transmission is approved to have a mileage of 12.40 km/l. In contrast, the Scorpio-N Petrol has ARAI mileage of 12.7 Kmpl.
The 2.2-litre mHawk engine is available in two configurations: a 152 bhp /330 Nm version for 4×2 models and a 173 bhp / 370 Nm iteration with 4×4. This engine is available in MX1, MX3, AX3 L, MX5, AX5 L, and AX7 L. The manual gearbox is standard in all but the AX5 L, while the torque converter can be had in MX3, MX5, AX5 L, and AX7 L.
ROXX with the less powerful diesel engine achieves an ARAI-certified mileage of 15.20 km/l. In comparison, the Scorpio-N Diesel has a mileage of 15.42 Kmpl, in both manual and automatic versions. However, ARAI’s reports do not mention the fuel economy figures of the more powerful diesel engine found in 4×4 variants.
