386 Mercedes Maybach S-Class super luxury sedans sold in India have been recalled to fix an ECU issue. A software issue in the ECU is said to cause the exhaust temperature of the Maybach S-Class to go beyond permissible levels.
This can in-turn damage the wiring harness of the car, potentially leading to a fire. Mercedes Maybach S-Class cars manufactured between April 29, 2021, and January 27, 2024 are said to be affected by this recall.
This proactive recall by Mercedes Benz India is meant to ensure that the ECU is fixed, and the potential fire prevented. So far, we’ve not had any instance of the Mercedes Maybach S-Class going up in flames.
And if Mercedes Benz India manage to finish the recall quickly, the problem would have been fixed before it actually results in a big catastrophe. Good work there, Mercedes. Mercedes Benz India dealers have begun reaching out to customers of the Maybach S-Class to carry out this recall.
The S-Class sold in India is the epitome of luxury and technology. It represents the pinnacle of car building from Mercedes Benz – a German luxury car maker known for building great cars. The Maybach S-Class has proven to be very popular among the rich and famous here.
Bollywood loves it, and so do businessmen. Why, the Maybach has been so popular that Mercedes Benz even assembles the car at its Chakan factory so that it can sell it at a very attractive price point.
The Mercedes Maybach S-Class sold in India is available in two trims: S580 and S680. The S580 is a mild hybrid, featuring a 4 liter V8 twin turbo petrol engine that makes 496 Bhp-700 Nm. It gets all wheel drive and a 9 speed torque converter automatic gearbox. Prices start from Rs. 2.72 crore. The car can hit 100 Kph from standstill in just 4.8 seconds, and top speed is electronically limited to 250 Kph.
The other Maybach S-Class on sale is the top-of-the-line S680 variant, which gets a 6 liter V12 twin turbo petrol engine that pumps out a supercar-like 603 Bhp-900 Nm. The big V12 is paired to a 9 speed torque converter automatic gearbox that drives all four wheels of the car.
The zero to hundred sprint is dispatched in 4.5 seconds while top speed is limited to 250 Kph. The S680 is priced at Rs. 3.44 crore. Unlike the S580 trim (that’s assembled here), the S680 is imported into India as a completely built unit (CBU), straight from Germany.
As for competition, the Mercedes Maybach S-Class occupies a unique position in that it doesn’t have direct competition from super luxury sedans. The Bentleys and Rolls Royces are priced much higher while BMWs and Audis are priced much lower. So, the Maybach S-Class occupies a very unique space, which makes it quite desirable, and this reflects directly on sales numbers. In fact, sales of the Maybach S-Class have been particularly strong because of its unique positioning.
Competition for the Maybach S-Class comes from stablemate – the GLS Maybach. The GLS Maybach is a super luxury SUV, and thanks to its imposing street presence and ground clearance, is a top pick for Indian conditions. A lot of people have difficulty choosing between the S-Class Maybach and GLS Maybach. The former is suitable for good roads while the latter can handle all roads thanks to its extra ground clearance, and SUV underpinnings.
