JSW-MG Motor want to go upmarket, just like Maruti Suzuki did with the NEXA. So, early next year, JSW-MG Motor will launch the MG Select range of car dealerships that will sell premium cars. And the first car to arrive at these dealerships will be the very best that MG Motor offers globally – the Cyberster electric sportscar. The teasers for the Cyberster are already out, and this gives us a fair indication on what to expect.
From the looks of it, the MG Cyberster that India will get will be the drop-top, oh-so-sexy convertible version. Scissor doors standard! It’ll be a two seater that doesn’t just look good but goes fast, very, very fast. How does a sub-4 second 0-100 Kph sprint sound? Well, the MG Cyberster will do all this and more, for it’s powered by two electric motors – one on each axle – that produce a supercar-like 544 Bhp-725 Nm.
And all 725 Nm of torque is available right off idle, which is why the MG Cyberster will hurtle to 100 Kph from standstill in 3.1 seconds, going all the way up to 200 Kph. MG even claims that the Cyberster’s the fastest roadster on the planet. But why only 200 Kph, you may ask.
Well, it’s electric and electric cars – even electric sportscars – glug through their batteries’ charge like a thirsty elephant emptying a tub of water on a hot day. To conserve charge, JSW-MG have limited the top speed of the Cyberster to 200 Kph, which is anyway a very illegal speed.
Talking about the battery, the MG Cyberster gets a 77 kWh unit, which gives it a claimed range of about 520 kilometers in the Chinese testing cycle. In the real world in India, the Cyberster should be able to go at least 350-400 kilometers on a single charge. For most people, especially sportscar owners, this should be more than sufficient as the Cyberster isn’t a car that you go cross-country touring in.
Ground clearance is 116 mm, and this is when nobody’s in the car. Add a couple of passengers, and ground clearance will drop to very close to 100 mm, or even lower. Now, that’s not a car that you want to go cross country touring in, at least in India where speed breakers are measured in feet rather than inches. Never mind the all wheel drive layout. That’s there for you to win traffic light grand prixs in the MG Cyberster.
It’s a sportscar, it’s low slung and it even had batteries set in the floor. So it should handle very well, and be supremely fun-to-drive. So, with the Cyberster, MG-JSW are essentially making a statement. They’re simply saying that this is what we’re capable of building, and this is how exhilarating a high performance electric car can be. Point taken!
Now, for the price. The Cyberster won’t come cheap, even if JSW-MG decide to assemble it here through the CKD kit route. Expect to pay anywhere between 60-80 lakh for the electric sportscar when it arrives at a MG Select dealership near you by the end of January 2025.
The India-debut of the MG Cyberster is slated to happen at the Bharat Mobility Expo of 2025, which will happen next month. We can’t wait to see JSW_MG’s latest and greatest in all its glory.
The Cyberster will initially be sold from MG Select dealerships across 12 Indian cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Chandigarh to name 8 such cities.
