Why MG Windsor EV Is A Hit – Two Owners Share Their Stories
The MG Windsor EV has taken the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market by storm. It has overtaken the Tata Nexon EV, long considered the benchmark for affordable EVs in the country, to become the top-selling electric car. With competitive pricing, robust performance, and user-friendly features, the Windsor EV has become a favorite among urban and suburban drivers alike. But what makes this vehicle so appealing? We delve into the experiences of two owners to uncover the reasons behind its rising popularity.
The MG Windsor EV comes in three variants—Excite, Exclusive, and Essence—with prices starting from Rs. 14.8 lakh on-road in Kochi. It boasts a 38 kWh battery pack, a claimed range of 332 km, and an electric motor producing 136 PS and 200 Nm of torque. Real-world figures show that it achieves around 280-300 km per charge under practical conditions. Additionally, MG offers a lifetime warranty on the battery, a feature that has won over many buyers.
Designed for urban and intercity commutes, the Windsor EV stands out for its spacious interior, competitive pricing, and practical features. Its dimensions rival those of the Hyundai Creta, offering more width and a larger boot capacity of 604 liters, making it a versatile choice for families and professionals alike.
Sreekumar’s Story: A Sales Professional’s Perspective
Sreekumar, a sales executive based in Kerala, shares his journey of choosing the MG Windsor EV over competitors like the Tata Nexon EV, Curvv EV, and Citroen e-C3. Previously, he drove a Ford Figo, but the demands of his job—extensive daily travel—led him to seek a cost-effective and practical EV.
For Sreekumar, the Windsor EV stood out due to its value-for-money proposition. The base-spec Excite variant met his needs, offering essential features and a spacious cabin at an affordable price. With minimal operational costs and no complicated ownership models like Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS), the Windsor EV proved to be the ideal choice for him.
“The on-road price and low running costs were key factors for me,” Sreekumar explains. “I also wanted a proper cabin with ample luggage space, and the Windsor delivered on all fronts.” He has consistently achieved a range of 280-290 km per charge and appreciates the balanced suspension that offers a comfortable SUV-like driving experience.
An Upgrade for a Long-Time Diesel Car Owner
Another owner, a former Volkswagen Polo driver, also chose the Windsor EV after 12 years with his diesel car. His primary driving needs are urban commutes, making the low running costs of an EV highly appealing. MG’s offering of one year of free charging further sweetened the deal.
When asked why he chose the Windsor EV over the Nexon EV or Curvv EV, he cited several reasons. “The lifetime battery warranty was a big factor for me. Plus, the real-life range is excellent and close to the advertised figure. The rear legroom and overall space in the Windsor are much better than the Tata EVs,” he explains.
He opted for the mid-spec Exclusive variant, which he considers the most value-for-money option. “It has almost all the features of the top-spec variant, except for the infinity glass roof and a few other extras,” he notes. Like Sreekumar, he avoided the BaaS model, preferring the simplicity of owning both the car and the battery outright.
Driving Experience and Practicality
Both owners praise the Windsor EV for its driving dynamics and ease of use. The vehicle’s strong regenerative braking and multiple drive modes make city driving efficient and enjoyable. Range anxiety, often a concern for EV owners, has not been an issue for either of them.
The Polo owner, who has taken the Windsor EV on road trips, emphasizes the importance of planning ahead. “You just need to mark the charging stations on your route. Once that’s done, the trips are smooth and stress-free,” he shares. Meanwhile, Sreekumar highlights the convenience of home charging with the standard 3.3 kW charger, which takes about 13.8 hours for a full charge.
Interior comfort is another strong point. While the base variant comes with fabric seats, higher trims feature plush leatherette upholstery with quilted patterns. The infotainment system, available in 10.25-inch and 15.4-inch options depending on the variant, is intuitive and enhances the driving experience.
Competitive pricing has been a significant factor in its success, allowing the Windsor EV to put up a strong fight against well-established rivals. MG’s strategic focus on offering high-quality EVs at accessible price points is clearly paying off. The MG Windsor EV has proven to be hit with urban commuters and professionals seeking a reliable, cost-effective electric vehicle. Its spacious interior, impressive range, and competitive pricing make it a compelling option in the growing EV market. The personal stories of owners like Sreekumar and the former Polo driver highlight its versatility and ability to meet diverse needs.
