A while ago, the tire manufacturing giant CEAT launched a marketing campaign in which the main tagline was “The streets are filled with idiots.” Well, with every passing day, we are now noticing that this is a very accurate statement. The roads are built for vehicles to travel on, and there are specified routes like zebra crossings for people to cross them. However, some people do not give heed to these zebra crossings and cross the roads from wherever they like. Recently, a video showing a near incident where a woman was about to get hit by a biker on the road as she was randomly crossing the road.

The video of this near-miss accident has been shared on Instagram by Abhay Moto Updates on their page. In the short video, a biker can be seen riding on a road where a woman randomly starts to cross the road. It can be noted that the woman did not look at the right side from where the biker was coming and immediately started crossing the road. Thankfully, the rider was not riding at a very high speed and was able to stop in time
Following his stoppage, the rider exclaims, “Aunty Ji,” to which the woman replies, “What?” She adds, “Can’t you see I am crossing the road?” The rider then replies that you are standing in the middle of the road. The woman then shouts a little, and the biker, in sarcasm, states that yes, it was his fault. After this, he continues riding the bike on the road, and the woman crosses the road.
Who was at fault?
In this particular incident, which is actually a very common occurrence in India, the major fault was of the woman. First of all, she should not be crossing the road without a pedestrian crossing. Secondly, even if she wanted to cross the road, she should have looked on the right side of the road to check if any vehicle was coming or not. However, the blame cannot be entirely pinned down on the woman. The rider should have also noted the woman standing on the side of the road and should have slowed down his speed.
Road crossing etiquettes
In India or any part of the world, road crossing etiquettes are crucial for pedestrian safety as well as for people driving vehicles. Firstly, it is extremely essential to use designated pedestrian crossings, like zebra crossings, whenever available. Secondly, people crossing the road should wait for a suitable gap in traffic and use hand signals if necessary to indicate their intention to cross. Additionally, adhering to traffic signals is also very crucial. Everyone should cross the road only when the pedestrian signal is green.
Now, we understand that most roads in India do not have a proper pedestrian crossing, so it’s necessary to exercise caution when crossing busy streets without designated crossings. Always look both ways and maintain a steady pace, and avoid sudden movements. Additionally, it is advisable to cross as a group whenever possible, as there’s increased visibility and safety when there are more people crossing the road at once. Lastly, everyone should be mindful of traffic rules, respect the right of way, and prioritize safety over haste when crossing Indian roads.
